When to use?
A passive check can represent the average result for a task done repeatedly, such as searching for secret doors over and over again. It can also be used when the narrator wants to secretly determine whether the characters succeed at something without rolling dice.

In any case, it's generally up to your narrator for when to rely on a passive check instead of a normal ability check.

A passive check is a special kind of ability check that doesn’t roll any dice.

Your for a passive check equals 10 + all modifiers that would otherwise apply to the check. Thus your most relevant ability modifier would always be added, and you'd add your PB if you're proficient in a relevant skill or tool.

Example: If a 1st-level character has a Dexterity of 15 and proficiency in the Stealth skill, the character has a passive Dexterity (Stealth) score of 14.

If you would have advantage on the check, add 5. For disadvantage, subtract 5.
