Stat Blocks

Hit Dice (HD) represent your ability to fight on when others couldn't. Each time you lose a Hit Die, it represents either taking an injury or sustaining severe exhaustion.

You have a number of Hit Dice equal to your character level. NPCs have Hit Dice as defined in their stat blocks, right next to their hit points.

You lose a Hit Die each time you reduced to 0 hit points, and you lose another each time you would take damage while already at 0 hit points. Effects which induce exhaustion, such as working in extreme climates, can make you lose Hit Dice regardless of damage.

If you are forced to lose a Hit Die when you have none remaining, you are defeated.

Some effects let you expend Hit Dice for benefits. For example you can regain extra hit points during a break if you expend Hit Dice. You can't attempt to expend Hit Dice if you have none remaining.

If you camp, your Hit Dice are restored up to no more than half of their maximum (rounded down). You regain all Hit Dice when you finish downtime.
