All creatures have a proficiency bonus, typically called PB. This bonus is added to the result of some ability checks, saves, attack rolls. Your PB affects some other features, such as your AC and how many attunements you can have at once.
Normally any creature's PB is +2. If your campaign has character levels, your PB increases by 1 every 4 levels you have; becoming +3 when you reach 5th level, then +4 when you reach 9th level, and so on, as shown in the table below.
An NPC's stat block is instead determined by its CR, and is included in its stat block.
PB Doesn’t Stack. Your PB can’t be added to a single die roll or other number more than once. For example, if two different effects say you can add your PB to a Wisdom save, you nevertheless add the bonus only once when you make the save.
PD: Proficiency Die. Some effects call for your proficiency die, or PD. As shown in the adjacent table, this is initially a d4 and increases one step every time your PB increases.
