Rather than return to his grandpa's tiny shack in the mountains or to West City with his friends Bulma and Yamcha, Son Goku traveled to Kame House, where he sought tutelage under the great Master Roshi. As the perverted Turtle Hermit's first test to earn his respect, Goku was tasked to retrieve an attractive woman. After failing multiple times, a second prospect, an ex-Orin Temple monk named Krillin, assisted him, resulting in both young warriors being accepted before their helper could make an attempt on Roshi's life. After training their bodies, hearts, and minds beyond those of legions of adults, all while being weighed down by turtle shells, they were ready to compete in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament. Breezing through the qualifying rounds, and succeeding with effort against Giran and Nam, he eventually met his match against the mighty and mysterious Jackie Chun, who removed his troublesome tail for a second time. This ingrained a crucial lesson into Goku's character, one that would lead him to greater and greater heights; there will always be someone stronger than you.
