power[edit]

this is an objectively better dagger. i think it should be martial or nerfed in some way

Agreed.
"A weapon with the disarming property is specially designed to disarm an opponent. They often have hooks, curved blades, angled spikes, or wrapping chains." This weapon is not specifically designed to disarm an opponent, and lacks all of the aforementioned properties. "A weapon with the hidden property is designed to be easily concealed by the holder." This weapon is no better at being concealed than a standard dagger, and due to its general lumpiness in comparison I'd say it's worse. "A weapon with the returning property has an aerofoil design that allows it to return to the thrower when thrown." This weapon is only optimized for flight in a single direction: Away from the one throwing it. All in all, I'd say drop at least half the extraneous properties, or reduce its hit die to 1d2 or something. Either way, you can't just slap a dozen new properties onto an item and call it good. That's how power creep happens, and if you get that going soon enough you'll only have three omniweapons in the game: Sneaky/stabby, Big/smashy, and something in between.
Read the description of the weapon; said properties were chosen for mechanical effect, not the property's flavor text. As for power creep, this is a better dagger that requires Martial proficiency to use but is markedly worse than almost any other Martial weapon, excluding I guess the blowgun that is markedly garbage. In what way is that a problem? Base + equal buff + equal nerf = ? --Ref3rence (talk) 20:38, 8 November 2020 (MST)
I fail to see what counts as a nerf, unless by 'nerf' you mean the fact that it is a martial weapon (which doesn't make sense either, as the very point of the entire category of 'ninja' weapons is that they can be picked up and used easily by the general populace). The 'Hidden' property can be justified, due to the fact that kunai were based on trowels and intended to resemble tools instead of weapons, but the whole "tie a rope to it and you can yank it back when you throw it" thing is just utterly ridiculous. It implies that the weight of up to 90 feet of rope would not adversely affect the flight characteristics of the weapon, and that a being would be able to effectively and reliably return the weapon to their hand by yanking on a rope attached to it from up to 90 feet away. I'm going to rewrite that bit using the Rope Dart (5e Equipment) as a template, to remove the sheer ridiculousness of that idea. --Nuke The Earth (talk) 17:05, 1 December 2020 (MST)
I changed my mind and I'm scrapping the whole rope dart thing, because honestly it's ridiculous. In exchange, it gives you a climbing speed when you wield two of them, which is also on-brand for kunai. If we tried to write that a kunai let you do everything a kunai is said to let you do, we'd have a book instead of an article, so I'm leaving it there. --Nuke The Earth (talk) 17:25, 1 December 2020 (MST)
