Talk:Elvish Warsword (5e Equipment)

An ability score prerequisite isn't a tradeoff for extra damage. You either meet the prerequisite or you don't: If you don't meet it, you're at no penalty (since you're dealing 2d6 damage with a two-handed weapon); If you do meet it, you can deal 1d10 in one hand with no penalty. Why is this now locked as a completely different weapon?[edit]

The entire point of this weapon was to be a greatsword a character could wield in one hand if they had sufficiently high abilities. This is an over sized rapier with no ability to be two handed now.

Balance. Before, this was a, as I understand it, a better longsword, which doubles as a greatsword, which also used Dexterity. Also, higher scores aren’t exactly hard to attain. Most characters can start out with at least 17 Dex and 13 Str just through point buy and a race with a +2 to Dex. Weapons should not completely outclass other weapons, and having easily attained score prerequisites don’t make up for it. --SwankyPants (talk) 12:09, 18 March 2021 (MDT)

But there's no point to using it now unless your character is a dueling specialist. A longsword i.e. a weapon that does 1d8 damage without Disadvantage will out DPS a 1d10 weapon with disadvantage in the long run. I'm fairly new to the page but this also wasn't intended to be a common run of the mill weapon every blacksmith would have on hand. Further more if the issue is balance, how is this more balanced? It's now a rapier that deals 1d10.

You don’t seem to exactly understand it. In essence, this is the greatsword of dueling, dealing the most damage and having the least versatility. This will always outdamage a longsword in one hand, but as soon as you bring in a shield or another weapon, you lose effectiveness. It has a place, that being the best choice for the Dueling fighting style, damage wise. If this is supposed to be that special, it probably should’ve been a magic weapon. But, it’s made like a mundane weapon, so it will be balanced like a mundane weapon.
Since you kinda interrupted me to ask, I will specifically address that. You can hold a shield when using a rapier. This gives you disadvantage when holding a shield. That’s what makes this balanced. --SwankyPants (talk) 12:43, 18 March 2021 (MDT)

I understand, I'm saying that was the idea. A greatsword you could one hand to be like the bastard sword in 3.5 this is a COMEPLETELY DIFFRENT WEAPON. Further more the original draft did not allow it to use dexterity for attack and damage rolls. How would you go about making a greatsword you can back track to be used one handed if desired then? Greatsword that deals 1d10 with disadvantage on one handed attack rolls? Okay, Cool. I was under the impression this page was all about sharing ideas you had for D&D stuff.

It is a site for sharing DND content, but we have an obligation to keep it balanced. Anyways, I have absolutely zero idea what your point here is. I’d appreciate some more clarity if you want this to go anywhere. --SwankyPants (talk) 14:02, 18 March 2021 (MDT)

My. Point. Is. This isn't what I originally envisioned, and I now have no way to change it. Like I asked earlier, how would you go about making a balanced greatsword you have the option to use in one hand? Because this isn't that. This is a heavy rapier with no means to 2 hand it.

Well, this isn’t your page, not your choice to decide where it ends up. Anyways, I would go about it this way. 1d10, can use Dexterity, can be one handed. Pretty simple. --SwankyPants (talk) 14:16, 18 March 2021 (MDT)

This is my page! I was the original poster! First thing I ever made on this site before I had an account, via a computer I no longer have. Look, I just found out about the discussions tab today when I found the page locked, I'm asking for help over what has happened, and you've frankly been very rude and condescending SwankyPants. I should have filed it under magic weapons, and should have balanced it better. Okay, I get it. Now what? The page is locked and it's as good as the polar opposite of what I was trying to make.

Well, it’s not locked, just protected against IP edits. You sign in and you can edit the thing again. If you genuinely believe the thing could be improved as a magic item, here’s the magic item preload. Do what you will. Personally, I think making two handed weapons versatile as a sorta material/template like adamantine/mithril/this page could work out pretty well.
Also I’d like to emphasize again it ain’t your page. It’s a wiki, you don’t own anything you post here. I don’t own my posts, you don’t own yours. I understand if it seems rude for me to point this out, but I do this a lot and it gets awfully frustrating when nobody reads the guidelines/rules/whatever. --SwankyPants (talk) 15:23, 18 March 2021 (MDT)

I apologize. I've not been having a good day, I've been very stressed over the last few weeks and was very frustrated to see something I created changed so drastically. Spending the last 2 hours trying to recover my password for this site only to find out I made this prior to making an account did not help. I am genuinely sorry SwankyPants. I will work harder to understand using this wiki better in the future.
