The Sheng Si people believe that all natural phenomena, animals, and plants possess divine power. On the first day of spring, the temples ring bells & people pray for good fortune in the coming year. Houses are cleaned the night before, new clothes are worn and special foods are prepared. On the winter solstice, they light thousands of paper lanterns and set them adrift in the sky, sea, and rivers to honor their ancestors.
