Work In Progress

Of The Void[edit]

You wake up and are floating in nothing but pure darkness, your body forming as you open your eyes. You're filled with questions; Where are you? What could it all mean? But there's very little time to thins, as you see a door of light appear in front of you. Somehow, your newly created physical form goes flying through it and you end up in the material plane. Whatever questions you had, you know that it's time to start looking for answers.

Skill Proficiencies: Perception, Stealth

Tool Proficiencies: Navigator's Tools or Thieves' Tools

Languages: Primordial and one of your choice

Equipment: Dependent on your Feature

Feature: Stolen Body[edit]

Sometimes you can see flashes of memories you'd never made. An old friend, a lover, a brother-in-arms. You feel this body, your body, as it goes about another life, maybe even in another world. As you go in you search for adventure, you slowly begin to piece together your old life, and eventually, you might even figure out how you got here.[1] You might even begin to re-learn old skills and knowledge[2]. How will you figure out why you were brought back? Do you even want to know?[3]
Equipment: Rags and a Quarterstaff

Alternate Feature: Born of the Destroyer[edit]

You know who made you: the vestige of destruction, Mikhail. The only question is, why? Considering both his domain and his army, it is unusual for him to create anything. As you go on you adventure, you will sometimes notice warriors in strange places, or clouds of locusts that seem to appear out of nowhere. Should you follow or speak with them (either of them), you may, piece by piece, find out why you were created, whether it be for a mission, a message, or just curiosity. Whatever it is, other people who meet you can see his influence over you. People with violent tendencies become slightly more docile in you presence, people tasked with protecting don't trust you, and others feel uneasy speaking with you.
Equipment: Rags and a Requip Band

Alternate Feature: Born of the Creator[edit]

You know who made you: the vestige of creation, Brielle. But what for? As you go on you adventure, you will sometimes children in strange places, or parrots that seem to appear out of nowhere. Should you follow or speak with them, you may, piece by piece, find out why you were created, whether it be for a mission, a message, or just curiosity. Whatever it is, other people who meet you can see her influence over you. Artists, children, musicians are all friendlier with you, and you find it easier to get along with plants animals.
Equipment: Rags and an Explorer's Pack

Alternate Feature: Born of the Whisperer[edit]

You know who made you: the vestige of knowledge and souls, Azrael. But what for? Are you here to learn a piece of hidden information, to deliver a message, to retrieve something, or maybe just to observer or experience something. As you go on you adventure, you'll encounter strange things; mysterious people with clouded eyes, statues that move, talking corvids, even impossible shadows. Sometimes, you may even hear voices whispering clues and see visions of hidden events.[4] Scholars and scientist are friendlier toward you, and people with secrets become slightly more likely to share them with you.

  1. Though this background was remade with Kurma in mind, you can work with your DM to decide if it was the work of some other being, so that it can be more in line with their campaign.
  2. If you are using this background to bring back a killed PC, work with your DM to figure exactly how your memory retrieval process works, as well as what skills or features transfer over to the new body.
  3. DM Note: If you do use Kurma for this background, I suggest having him appear every once in a while to the player in his material form.
  4. Work with your DM to figure out the contents of these whispers and visions.
