Know Thy Foe (5e Spell)

From D&D Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search
Scales.png This page is of questionable balance. Reason: Firstly, I don't think the DM should ever be forced to tell a player the specific statistics of a creature: these are abstractions, not things a character would actually know. Secondly, you can get an idea of a creature's hit point percentage by looking at it. A good DM will give you an indication of how worn down it is. Thirdly, D&D does not have "called shots". Fourthly... you have to have a figurine of the target's race?! If you know what monsters you will be encountering, you wouldn't need this spell? Fifthly, all creatures already have all ability scores... is "learn one ability" referring to something else?

Know Thy Foe
1st-level Divination
Casting time: 1 Action
Range: 30 feet
Components: V,S,M (a figurine of the target's race)
Duration: Concentration, Up to 10 Minutes

Choose one creature you can see within range. That creature must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, you know their current health percentage for the duration and learn their highest ability score and its worth. Additionally, you learn one ability the creature has and how often they can use it. On a successful save, the spell fails.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you also learn the target’s lowest ability score and its worth, and you gain only -3 to called shots against the creature for the duration.
