Directly descended from the arming sword, and a contemporary of the lighter dueling swords, the "basket-hilted sword" was a heavy military blade typically carried by cavalry. Some styles later influenced the cavalry saber. These heavy, one-handed blades played a major role in the evolution of fencing as an art or sport more than the combat exercise dueling common in the days of the arming sword. The added weight grants significant striking power for a single-handed weapon.
