Vaseraga's Vicious Scythe (5e Equipment)

If I were to damage a creature, wait a day, then damage it again, would the additional damage remain? Design Note: This item uses the Unique Item Rarity homebrew ruleset.

Weapon (scythe), unique (requires attunement) A scythe made of a strange black metal, its edge softly pulsates with a yellow light as the user cuts through their target. Along its shaft the words "Retribution and Violence" are crudely carved in Undercommon. Retribution. You gain a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. Once every dawn, you may use this scythe to cast counterspell as a reaction. Violence. After you successfully damage a creature with this weapon, your next attack rolls with it against the same creature will deal an additional 2 slashing damage. The bonus damage from this effect cannot exceed 20. This bonus is reset to 0 if you attack a different creature.
