Hi Balgar, thank-you for contributing new 5th edition magic items to the wiki. I'm wondering if you could take the time to read through the magic items in the Dungeon Master's Guide so that you can get a feel for how they are written. For example, look at magic items that adjust a player's ability scores (e.g. the belt of giant's strength). I've made some changes to Sseth Scimitar (5e Equipment) to reflect how 5th edition mechanics work. Marasmusine (talk) 08:16, 13 April 2019 (MDT)

How do you recommend rewording Sseth's Ring so that I can still add a set bonus? I'm assuming its the wording I used for the set bonus that is causing the problem "Balgar, son of Mikon and Aryeh (talk) 10:33, 13 April 2019 (MDT)"

Hi Balgar, it would probably be something like:
"While wearing this ring, your Strength score changes to 27. If you are attuned to two other Sseth set pieces, your Strength score changes to 29. If your Strength is already equal to or greater than the rings's score, the item has no effect on you."
However, as the belt of giant's strength (from the Dungeon Master's Guide) already does this, it needs to be a bit different.
You could also do something similar with Dexterity, but you need to be more careful with the numbers. Dexterity is "worth" more than Strength, as Dexterity saving throws are far more common, and it also affects AC as well as ranged attacks and finesse weapons. It probably shouldn't exceed 20 by much. Okay, for the flail, what are the end effects?

  • It's effective size is increased. Since a flail deals 1d8 damage, sune's flail deals 2d8 damage. That's the only effect of this, so you should just say it deals 2d8 damage.
  • 5th edition doesn't use "critical range" or a "critical multiplier", which are 3rd edition mechanics. What you say instead is "if the attack roll is a 19 or 20, you score a critical hit". You don't need to mention the multiplier here, as a critical hit doubles the number of dice you roll (4d8 in this case).
  • If it's in a set, this weapon deals 4d8 damage. For the critical, you would say "if you score a critical hit you deal an additional 4d8 damage" (on top of the 8d8 you would normally roll)
So what do I mean by "weapon of more damage"? Because, that's all this weapon does, it unconditionally deals more damage than a regular mace. We already have dozens of magic items that do this.
Look at the magic weapons in the Dungeon Master's Guide. Many of them do deal more damage, but under conditions that make them more interesting. Some deal extra damage only to certain monster types, or that exclude certain monster types. Some deal damage over time, some deal typed damage, some overcome a damage resistance. Some have utility functions or have charges that grant specialized effects. Marasmusine (talk) 11:41, 13 April 2019 (MDT)
I should also mention that the extra damage dealt by Sseth's flail is incredibly high, far too high, so again I invite you to look at the DMG magic items that deal extra damage like dragon slayer or dwarven thrower. Marasmusine (talk) 11:44, 13 April 2019 (MDT)
