Emu Names[edit]

There is a dichotomy to Emu names. While females usually take more musical, sibilant names, males are usually given harsher-sounding names with hard consonants.

Male: *emu noises*, *emu noises*, *emu noises*, *emu noises*, *emu noises*

Female: *emu noises*, *emu noises*, *emu noises*, *emu noises*, *emu noises*

Emu Traits[edit]

Dessert-dwelling raptors as skilled in war as they are in standing around being a bird.
Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Intelligence score increases by 1 (see Birdbrain).
Age. After hatching, emus mature and age around the same rate as humans but only live until their mid 30s
Alignment. Emus tend to be "chaotic neutral" 😉
Size. Emus are similar height to humans, many emus are around five to six feet tall, but an average of 175cm. Your size is Medium.
Type. Beast
Speed. Your base walking speed is 35 feet. Your base flying speed is 0 feet.
Low-Light Vision. While you cannot see in darkness, a little dim light doesn't stop you from seeing danger. You do not have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks when in a lightly obscured area.
Peck. Your beak can pierce the very fabric of reality. You can make a beak attack using either strength or dexterity, you deal 1d10+MOD magical piercing damage. This damage increases by 1d10 at 6th level (2d10), 11th level (3d10), and 16th level (4d10).
Pack Rush. You coordinate well with allies to bring home the kill. If at least one of your allies is within 5 feet of a creature and the ally isn't incapacitated, you have advantage on an attack roll against that creature. You may alternatively grant this advantage to an ally if the same conditions are met. You must finish a long rest before using this trait again.
Birdbrain. Your unique combination of physically small brain imbued with chaos allows you immunity to attacks and abilities that affect brains, such as those used by Illithids. By the random chance of chaos theory you perform the same actions as a member of an above average intelligence player race. If you are unsure what an emu would do, roll 1d7.
Tastes Like Kobold. Your flesh is very tasty especially if baked into a pie. If you see anyone eating meat pies assume one of your friends is involved. See page 29 of KOBOLDS_ATE_MY_BABY!_In_Colour!!!.pdf (if you don't want to pay for that document, click here or here)
Languages. You can speak Common, are functionally illiterate but can understand another emu reading something out loud using their birdbrain. You will need to explain it back to them though. There is no Emu language because every emu assumes everything else thinks the same way.

Lack of Hands[edit]

Like how Spyro was replaced by Ratchet in order to hold weapons, emus lack hands. However, because they are such magical creatures when imbued by a player they can use the same equipment as a humanoid. How this works is player's choice. If you have trouble imagining an emu wielding a sword or using a sonic screwdriver or giving someone the finger; read this list and roll some dice:

  • Vectors from Elfen Lied
  • Innate use of the Mage Hand spell but without restrictions (pretty much as above)
  • A human arm that extends from your chest (see movie-Zaphod)
  • A giant foam finger from a sporting event
  • Kobold assistant (see Tastes Like Kobold for information about Australian native Kobolds)
  • Invisible weapons and armor
  • "A Wizard Did It"
