The Chitine[edit]

Physical Description[edit]

A chitine is a four-armed creature covered head to toe in dark hair that usually stands at about 4 feet tall. Its six eyes can range in color from bright white to a dull yellow, even orange in rare cases. Their scrawny appearance can sometimes cause others to consider them weak. However, this is never the case, and one should never turn their back on a chitine. Their four arms allow for a heightened ability to climb, as well as to lift objects. They secrete an oily substance on their limbs that renders them immune to their own webs' stickiness.

History[edit]

Chitine were originally created by drow priests in a failed experiment to produce a slave race. Despite this failure, they were inducted into forced labor nonetheless. Under the drows, chitine were inducted en masse into the cult of Lolth. Only a century later, however, they rebelled against their masters violently and escaped the drow city of the Underdark. Escaping the roving eyes of the pursuing hunters, the chitine gathered and founded the village of Yathchol as their haven. There, they continually repelled attempts from the drow to hunt them out of existence. They have been recorded to negotiate with driders to attack drow cities, as well as forge defense pacts for their villages. Under guidance from the choldriths, the chitines have proliferated the reaches of their villages and webs.

Society[edit]

In the caverns of the upper and middle northern Underdark, chitine weave complex web systems which nestle their villages at the heart. Some are located in the underground forests as well, while others remain slaves within certain houses of drow. These webs are often built with labyrinthine design so drow and other unwanted visitors may get lost or ensnared and starve to death or become a meal. At the center of every village is a temple to Lolth, a religion they inherited from the drows. Choldriths, which are seen to be Lolth's chosen and blessed with wisdom, usually lead chitines as their priests, as well as village leader. Despite the two being a different race, they have built some symbiotic relationship over the spider goddess.

Chitine Names[edit]

Chitine were created from rituals of the drow, and therefore follow common drow naming practices. However, Those who were born to a colony usually have names easily pronounced around their mandibles, mainly consisting of hard consonants and long vowels. They are mostly unable to pronounce vocal consonants such as g, b, d, or r. Due to the nature of these names, as well as their general applicability, it is theorized chitine do not differentiate in names by gender. They are given one name by their parent which is a unique series of clicks, this is a name difficult for other races to pronounce and so they often create a new pronounceable name upon meeting another race.
