Talk:Clone (5e Background)

Equipment[edit]

Referencing the request for additional starting equipment, it is possible the original had prepared an extra set of basic equipment should it be revived. It is also possible the original valued one of its possessions and left a sapphire with the clone. The sapphire was used in a Drawmij's Instant Summons spell and, when crushed, will instantly summon the item from the original to the clone. On start, the clone can choose to crush the sapphire and take the item, prompting the original to investigate and possibly hunt the clone down, to hold onto the sapphire for the right time, to leave the sapphire behind entirely, or even to sell it. The clone also has a chance to not get the item on crushing the sapphire, but instead learn the location of the wielder if the item is being worn or carried. The player and the DM would have to discuss what the item is. This might have to be under Clone: Variant as it is highly ambiguous.

Note - Just leaving this here as a suggestion.

Experiment[edit]

To a lesser extent, isn't the clone background an experiment? --209.97.85.48 13:45, 30 January 2016 (MST)

None of the "purposes" given suggest an experiment.
I don't like how this background lets you start with any three proficiencies. Marasmusine (talk) 14:57, 30 January 2016 (MST)
The main reason why I asked is I'm not comfortable with this background as is. All D&D clones I've encountered have the memories and experiences of the ones cloned. --209.97.85.48 13:11, 13 February 2016 (MST)

Skill Proficiencies[edit]

I understand Medicine being listed (a little), but why is Arcana listed.--Redrum 13:53, 12 March 2016 (MST)

This Background Could Be Derived from a Spell[edit]

PHB p.222 describes the spell Clone, an 8th level necromancy spell. Using 1 cubic inch of flesh from a creature, you can create an inert duplicate body of a creature. When that creature dies, its soul transfers to the clone body. One poorly defined line from the spell reads, "it remains inert and endures indefinitely as long as its vessel remains undisturbed." It leaves that point where it stands without clarification. This could either mean disturbing the jar causes the inert body to rapidly decompose, OR disturbing the jar causes the clone to become active as an independent creature. I would like to revise this class to follow the latter implications.

Deletion[edit]

Uh... No. I'm guessing Taylor Kane (person from removed attribution), Mkill (OP), 204.11.187.62 (Posted attribution) and 204.11.187.61 (blanked the page) are all the same person. Taylor, this page is written almost 30% by me using phrases and concepts based on personal research. I like this page a lot. Please do not delete it. Also, I saw the comment on GD's page, this page is licensed under the GNU-FDL. If the page's content, as it exists now, is to be reproduced, then all of the authorship (as provided in the history section) and the GNU-FDL needs to be reproduced with the copy as well, or it is a violation of the license this content was originally published under- a license that one of the contributing authors values very much. As I understand it, you can still redistribute this content elsewhere- even for profit- but you'll need to include Mkill, Dmilewski, 204.11.187.62, AlbertMelfo, Green Dragon, 209.97.85.48, Marasmusine, 107.0.215.177, Cotsu Malcior, 204.11.187.62, and me in the credits as contributing authors, AND state that the content is licensed under the GNU-FDL 1.3. Fact is, this isn't just "your" baby any more, it's a collaborative work with the combined inputs of (apparently) 11 people. It is at least ethically questionable to claim it all as your own. --Kydo (talk) 12:01, 6 October 2016 (MDT)

If it has been that edited then I'll just take it down from the DM's Guild. This is more work than I want to do and I don't want to take someone else's work. I hadn't realized how many others had changed this around from my original. I'll do a write up more like what I had initially perhaps and put it out there. Reading through the changes I'm not the biggest fan of where it is anymore. Glad to see that people like the idea of the background and feel passionately about working on it.

I think the concept just needs some work. --Redrum 14:41, 8 October 2016 (MDT)
