Sendo Monk[edit]

The Enigmatic Art[edit]

There are many monasteries that train many monks in many martial arts. Among them, however, is an art based on the channeling of Ki to mimic the sun's life giving light, and to vanquish the undead. They differ from most monks by their use of tools beyond their body and their eccentric selection of trainees. But above all they teach one very important lesson in the mountains where they train. "Keep breathing."

Sendo Monks are martial artists that base their fighting style on versatility and ingenuity. They use their weapons and their Ki in bizarre ways and take pride in the more outlandish ways in which they have felled foes. Their art relies entirely on how certain breathing techniques affect their Ki, allowing them to strech the limits of the imagination on what one's body and spirit are truly capable of. The two most notable traits of their art is its ability to send Ki through liquid and its specific uses against the undead. Legend has it that an ancient race that no longer exists in this realm introduced Necromancy to the world. In the wake of the great battles that came due to the use of that magic, warriors that trained in the mountains, as the thin air allowed them to breath more deeply, developed a new set of techniques to combat the new menace. The art of the Hermit, "Sendo".

Martial Arts[edit]

At 1st level, your practice of martial arts gives you mastery of combat styles that use unarmed strikes and martial arts weapons, which are shortswords and any simple melee weapons that don't have the two-handed or heavy property.

You gain the following benefits while you are unarmed or wielding only martial arts weapons and you aren't wearing armor or wielding a shield:

  • You can use Dexterity instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of your unarmed strikes and martial arts weapons.
  • You can roll a d4 in place of the normal damage of your unarmed strike or martial arts weapon. This die changes as you gain sendo monk levels, as shown in the Martial Arts column of the Sendo Monk table.
  • When you use the Attack action with an unarmed strike or a martial arts weapon on your turn, you can make one unarmed strike as a bonus action. For example, if you take the Attack action and attack with a quarterstaff, you can also make an unarmed strike as a bonus action, assuming you haven't already taken a bonus action this turn.

Certain monasteries use specialized forms of the martial arts weapons. For example, you might use a club that is two lengths of wood connected by a short chain (called a nunchaku) or a sickle with a shorter, straighter blade (called a kama). Whatever name you use for a martial arts weapon, you can use the game statistics provided for the weapon.

Sendo Breathing Technique[edit]

The Sendo art is one based on channeling your own life force and sending it through your body by using breathing techniques.

Starting at 1st level you gain a number of Ki points equal to your Sendo Monk level. The maximum amount of Ki points you can have at a given time is equal to your Sendo Monk level.

You may use an action to practice breathing and burn a Sendo Monk hit die, you gain a number of Ki points equal to the die's result. You may only use this ability once per Long Rest.

You cannot spend Ki points if you cannot breathe.

At the end of a short or long rest you draw all of your expended ki back into yourself.

The Sendo Art[edit]

The Sendo art uses Ki in an unusual way, channeling it in a way that mimics the sun's rays. It was developed as a way to fight back against the undead.

Undead creatures gain a vulnerability to any Radiant damage caused by a Sendo Monk feat that required spending a Ki point.

Sendo Ki[edit]

Sendo monks are able to send their Ki through the bodies of others, either dirupting or reinforcing the natural flow of their bodies.

Starting at 1st level, if you make an unarmed strike, you can spend a Ki point to use one of the following effects: They gain 1d6 + their Con modifier Health Points or they take 1d6 Radiant damage. In both cases you still roll for the unarmed strike but can choose whether you add modifiers to your damage roll.

You can spend an additional Ki point to add 1d6 to your damage roll.

Undead creatures, constructs, and creatures with a vulnerability to Radiant damage cannot gain Health from this feat.

Rubber Punch[edit]

The Sendo monk launches their fist forward and strikes their opponent via an elongated arm. The attack involves a Sendo breathing technique that dislocates and stretches the joints to extend the arm and give it greater reach. Ki can be used to undo the damage caused by this.

Starting at 2nd level, when you make an unarmed strike, you can use a Ki point or take 2 damage to add 5 feet to your unarmed strike's range.

Sendo Monk Path[edit]

At 3rd level you may choose one of three paths to focus your training on: The Path of the Vanquisher, The Path of the Healer, or The Path of the Seer. Your choice grants you features at 3rd level and again at 6th, 10th, 14th and 20th levels.

Liquid Sendo[edit]

The Sendo monks stand out among other martial artists with their ability to channel Ki through liquid.

At 3rd level you gain the ability to spend a Ki point to add 1d6 Radiant damage to the damage roll of a weapon that is covered in liquid.

If you are partially or wholly submerged in liquid, but can still breathe, you may also spend a Ki point to create a 5 foot radius of Ki around you. Any creature that enters the area must succeed a Con roll with a DC of 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier or take 1d6 Radiant damage.

Ability Score Improvement[edit]

When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can't increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.

Liquid Sonar[edit]

The Sendo monk uses the ripples created in a container of liquid to detect other entities around themselves by synching the flow of the liquid with the flow of their Ki as it spreads around them.

At 4th level you can hold a container of liquid with a sufficiently open top, such as a cup, a goblet, or a bowl, and spend a Ki point. You gain awareness of all entities around yourself at a 30 ft radius, including those who are behind cover.

This effect lasts for 1 minute but can be reused as a bonus action once it has been activated, however you must pay 1 Ki point each time you reuse it. You cannot gain Ki points while this effect is active.

Liquid Launcher[edit]

The Sendo art allows one to use Ki to manipulate liquid, as opposed to simply send Ki through it.

Starting at 5th level you can use any liquid you touch, including the liquid in your mouth, as a ranged weapon.

You may use your spit as a dart to deal 1d4 + your Con modifier Radiant or Piercing damage to a target. Otherwise you may spend a Ki point to cause about half a cup of liquid to harden, and launch it, causing 1d6 + your Con modifier Radiant or Bludgeoning damage to a target.

For every additional half a cup of liquid used you must spend an additional Ki point and you add a 1d6 to your damage.

You use your Dex modifier to roll for this attack.

Liquid Tension[edit]

A rather advanced Sendo technique. If a Sendo monk is able to gather enough Ki at the very tips of their body, they can increase the surface tension of a liquid they come in contact with, allowing them to maneuver around liquid as if it was solid ground.

At 5th level you can spend a Ki point to treat any liquid surface as solid ground. Still or gently moving liquid is regular terrain, fast moving liquid is difficult terrain, and waterfalls become climbable.

While this feature is in effect you are treated as partially submerged for the purpose of Sendo Monk feats.

This effect lasts for 1 minute but can be reused as a bonus action once it has been activated, however you must pay 1 Ki point each time you reuse it. You cannot gain Ki points while this effect is active.

Chromatic Sendo[edit]

The ability to alter your Ki so that it resonates with certain natural elements. Its name is derived from the color that seems to surround those who use it.

At 6th level, the Sendo Monk can choose one of the following specialized features. At 20th level, they may choose an additional one.

Shappire Sendo
If you choose this feature, you gain the ability to breathe and use Ki underwater by spending 1 Ki point.

If you spend a Ki point while underwater you gain the benefits of this effect instantly.

Any Sendo Monk feat that mentions Liquid and can have multiple Ki points spent to use it is treated as having an additional Ki point spent on it while this feat is active.

This effect lasts for 1 minute but can be reused as a bonus action once it has been activated, however you must pay 1 Ki point each time you reuse it. You cannot gain Ki points while breathing underwater with this effect.

Silver Sendo
If you choose this feature, you gain the ability to use any Sendo Monk feat that requires liquid on air, save for Liquid Tension.

You do not count as submerged in air. Oxygen is not a flammable gas.

Scarlet Sendo
All Sendo Monk feats that require the use of liquid can now ignite the liquid at your discrepancy, if it is flammable.

Anyone that comes in contact with the burning liquid, save for the Sendo Monk that ignited it, must succeed a Con save with a DC of 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier or take 1d4 fire damage per round. Every turn the burning target may roll an additional Con save against a DC 1 lower than the previous turn.

Sendo Monk Cross Learning[edit]

At 7th level you may choose a Sendo Monk Path that is different from the one you chose at 3rd level. You gain the lowest level feature of that path that you do not already have. You may do this again at 12th and 17th level.

Undaunted Spirit[edit]

At 7th level, whenever you would need to roll a Str or Dex saving throw you may roll a Con saving throw instead.

Sendo Deep Pass[edit]

Starting at 8th level, should the Sendo Monk die, they may spend all their Ki points. They begin to rapidly age as their Ki leaves their body and either enters a living target within sight or is stored within a bubble of liquid near the Sendo Monk (If the Sendo Monk is not carrying any liquid they may use their blood).

The target of this feat (if the Sendo Monk chose to store their Ki in a bubble then whatever creature touches the bubble, provided it is not undead, a construct, or vulnarable to Radiant damage, is the target) then gains a number of temporary Ki points equal to the number of Ki points spent on this feat as well as a number of Sendo Monk levels equal to a quarter of the Sendo Monk levels of the dead Sendo Monk, rounded down.

You do not gain proficiencies from multiclassing in this way.

If this feat is used, the dead Sendo Monk cannot be resurrected or revived, but may pass a final message along with their Ki. The message is immediately understandable to the receiver, regardless of what languages they know, and can contain information of their final resting place coming from any sense the Sendo Monk had along with their parting words.

Slowed Aging[edit]

At 9th level, the Sendo Monk has mastered the art of breathing evenly no matter the situation. This mastery has the benefit of increasing the amount of life force within the user, effectively slowing down their aging.

This feature allows the Sendo Monk to only rest for 4 hours in order to gain the benefits of a long rest. If you have any other feats that affect the time you need to sleep, that time is instead halved. Also, you are able to ignore the penalties of exhaustion in combat.

In addition, the age at which your race would be considered old or logically dead is doubled.

Ki Refraction[edit]

Starting at 11th level, you can use a gem worth 50 gp or more and spend 2 Ki points to shoot a beam, dealing 2d10 Radiant damage to a target within sight. For every additional 50 gp that the gem costs you may add 1d10 to your damage roll.

Bubble Barrier[edit]

At 13th level, the Sendo Monk is able to spend 2 Ki points to fire multiple bubbles of liquid at a target, which combine into a massive bubble that traps it.

The target must make a Dex saving throw with a DC of 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier or be trapped within the massive bubble. The target will be unable to move or attack until they break free or are broken free.

To escape, the target or one of the target's allies must make a Str check with the same DC as the Dex saving throw.

Liquid Cutter[edit]

A direct improvement of the Liquid Launcher. The launched liquid now spins with great force, resembling a sawblade.

Starting at 15th level you can use any liquid you touch, including the liquid in your mouth, as a ranged weapon.

You may spend 3 Ki points to cause about half a cup of liquid to harden, begin spinning furiously, and launch it, causing 3d8 + your Con modifier Radiant or Slashing damage to a target.

For every additional half a cup of liquid used you must spend an additional 2 Ki points and you add a 3d8 to your damage.

You use your Dex modifier to roll for this attack.

Gliding Ki[edit]

Starting at 18th level you gain the ability to aim objects with your Ki.

When you spend Ki points while making a ranged attack you gain advantage on that attack roll and do not need direct line of sight to aim at a target. You only need to be aware of its location and have a path in sight that can lead to it.

The Path of the Vanquisher[edit]

The Sendo monks who have sworn to fight back against the horrors of the night. They focus their use of Ki on making their own bodies more sturdy and their minds more resolute.

Rubber Body

An extension of the Rubber Punch, this technique involves softening one's entire body, effectively becming a contortionist.

At 3rd level you spend 1 Ki point as an action or a reaction to escape grapples or restraints and move 5 feet away from them. Once you apply this effect, you are considered prone.

Sunlight Sendo

Named such after the bright yellow glow that accompanies this technique. It allows one to use Ki to quicken their movements past the norm.

At 6th level, when you declare an attack, you may spend a Ki point to make an unarmed strike as a bonus action. The unarmed strike deals an additional 1d6 + your Con modifier Radiant damage.

Sepia Sendo

A technique that invloves using one's Ki to reshape the earth by kneeling down and sending Ki through the surrounding area.

Starting at 10th level, as an action, you can spend 2 Ki points to make all ground in a 20 foot radius around yourself difficult terrain. In addition, any creature that enters the area takes 1d6 Radiant damage per turn that they are in the area.

This effect lasts for 1 minute.

Sendo Drop Kick

The Sendo monk bounds forward with both legs raised, aiming to trap their opponent in their grip while defending with their arms.

Starting at 14th level you can spend 2 Ki points and declare a target anywhere within 15 feet of you that you can see. You instantly change location to their location and they must succeed an Athletics check against a DC of 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier or take 2d8 + your Con modifier Radiant damage and be considered as Grappled.

You cannot make your move action the turn you use this feat.

Shining Sendo

Channeling Ki in many frequencies at once, the user of this technique is surrounded by a great shining rainbow. They deliver a strike or volley of strikes that is charged with a great amount of Ki, channeling every element, to fell any opponent.

At 20th level you can spend all of your Ki points to attack any number of targets in a 60 foot radius around you.

If your attack roll passes the target's AC they take the damage of your unarmed strike plus a number of d10s of Radiant damage equal to the amount of Ki points used for this feat and your Con modifier times the amount of d10s rolled.

If your attack roll does not pass the traget's AC they take half of the damage they would have.

The Path of the Healer[edit]

The Sendo monks who have sworn to protect their fellow men. They focus their use of Ki on maintaining the natural flow of their body and the bodies of their allies.

Alternating Ki

By changing the resonance of the Ki within their body, Sendo monks are able to home in on foreign matter within their body and expel it.

Starting at 3rd level you may use an action to remove the effects of a poison or ailment in your body. This also works on curses that would cause one to become undead.

You may spend one Ki point to apply this effect to another target you are touching.

Sendo Deep Breathing

A special breathing technique that prompts the body to heal itself.

Starting at 6th level you may use an action to roll a number of d4s equal to your Con modifier, gain that many hit points. You can spend a Ki point to instead cause someone else to gain that many hit points by giving them mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Undead creatures, constructs, and creatures with a vulnerability to Radiant damage cannot gain Health from this feat.

Sendo Web Shield

At 10th level, the Sendo Monk infuses their Ki into strands of hair, thread, or wire to make them hard enough to block incoming projectiles. As a reaction, they can spend a Ki point and roll a Constitution save against any incoming attack that targets them or a creature within 5 feet, including projectiles and spells with physical attributes (example: Fireball or Witchbolt).

To successfully deflect the attack, the Sendo Monk's save must meet or exceed the attacker roll. If a spell requires a save, this feature takes the place of that saving throw, and does not stack with it.

Spells that do not have physical attributes (examples: Fear or Blight) cannot be deflected in this way.

Ki Cycling

Beginning at 14th level, your mastery of ki grants you proficiency in all saving throws.

While another creature you are touching rolls a saving throw you may spend a Ki point to give them profiency in that saving throw. If they already have profiency they gain double profiency.

True Ki

At 20th level you may touch a creature that has been dead for no longer than 200 years and that died for any reason except old age. If the creature's soul is free and willing, you may spend a Ki point for every decade that it's been dead (Min. 5), it's restored to life with all its hit points.

This feat closes all wounds, neutralizes any poison, cures all diseases, and lifts any curses. The spell replaces damaged or missing organs and limbs and can be used on the living as well. If the creature was undead, it is restored to its non-undead form.

The Path of the Seer[edit]

The Sendo monks who have trained to gain a deeper understanding of Ki. They focus their use of Ki to gain knowledge of future events, sometimes by manipulating them themselves.

Cold Reading

By sensing the Ki flow in others, some Sendo monks can predict their opponent's next move and react to it before it had even occured.

At 3rd level you may hold your action and declare a target. At their turn, once they have declared their action but before they rolled, you may decide to do any of the following as a reaction:

Disengage and move 5 feet away from them, take the dodge action, or declare their action to them, in which case they must succeed on a Charisma save, using your Insight roll as the DC, or else they fail to preform the action.

Sendo Boomerang

A special technique that involves storing Ki in an object and releasing it at a later time.

Starting at 6th level you can spend a Ki point while making a ranged weapon attack with a weapon that you can send Ki through or while using a Sendo Monk feat that involves a ranged attack. At the start of your next turn the thrown weapon recoils from its position and throws itself back at the original target of the attack using the same rolls as the original attack.

If the original attack missed you may reroll the second attack.

Sendo Mind Link

A Sendo monk is able to read the brain waves of another person and manipulate them with the use of Ki by putting all 10 of their fingers on the person's head or pushing their heads together.

Starting at 10th level you may spend a Ki point to exchange thoughts and memories with a willing creature you can touch.

Sendo Trap

Using the same technique as the Sendo Boomerang, you gain the ability to store Ki in objects until another entity steps near it.

At 14th level you gain the ability to spend 2 Ki points and throw a handful of small objects you can send Ki through on the ground near you. They cling to the surface of nearby objects and are hidden to any creature with a passive perception of 14 or lower, or that has not passed a Perception check of DC 15.

When a creature moves within 10 feet of where you first used the feat they must succeed a Dex saving throw of DC 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier or be knocked prone and take 1d6 Radiant damage.

True Sight

The Sendo Monk becomes one with life itself, allowing them to sense all life under the sun.

At 20th level, while you are concious and breathing you can't be surprised and have advantage on attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws. Additionally, other creatures have disadvantage on attack rolls against you.

You must spend a Ki point for every hour that the effect is active or it becomes inactive until the next time you fall asleep and reawaken.

Multiclassing[edit]

Prerequisites. To qualify for multiclassing into the Sendo Monk class, you must meet these prerequisites: 13 Constitution and either 13 Strength or Dexterity.

Proficiencies. When you multiclass into the Sendo Monk class, you gain the following proficiencies: One Tool of your choice.
