Armor (Medium), Very Rare (Major)

At first glance, this set of scale mail armor is no different than the rest other than it being much lighter weight; however, upon closer inspection, you notice a few cracks here and there, and… is it breathing!?

This set of armor is a cursed magic item. In a wild experiment, a mad Wizard fused together a trapped mimic and a nearby set of scale mail armor. As the armor lives, it must feed. A meal the size of six rations will sate one stack of its Hunger. One stack of Hunger is gained if 24 hours pass without a proper meal. Extra or insufficient rations do not roll over into the next 24 hours. Only one stack of Hunger can be sated every 24 hours. Feeding it does not increase its weight. It is dormant unless equipped, and it then begins at zero stacks of Hunger. To unequip this item, its wearer must either succeed on a DC 35 Strength check or perish. Remove Curse may also be used, but doing so separates the scale mail armor and the mimic, and the mimic is immediately hostile to all nearby creatures.
Should its Hunger grow, the following effects occur:
  • 0: Nothing.
  • 1: It occasionally anxiously shuffles.
  • 2: Above effect. In addition, it frequently grumbles, growls, and leaves a trail of viscous saliva. Its wearer has disadvantage on Stealth checks.
  • 3: Above effects. In addition, it attempts to drive lashing tentacles into the ground to hold its wearer in place. Its wearer’s Speed is halved.
  • 4: Above effects. In addition, it yowls and roars in hunger, and most tentacles have taken root. Its wearer is now Restrained.
  • 5: Above effects. In addition, its wearer now suffers 3d6 Piercing damage each round. Should the wearer reach 0 HP and fail their Death Saving Throws, the Mimic Armor consumes their body over the course of 3 turns.
