Longsword of Penance (5e Equipment)
Weapon (longsword), rare (requires attunement) Forged in the forsaken catacombs beneath a long-dead cathedral, the Longsword of Penance is a relic used by flagellant paladins and martyrs. The blade is heavy, chipped, and rusted, and its handle is lined with barbed spikes, as if thorny metal vines wrap around the weapon. Penance Blade. Whenever you hit a creature with an attack using this weapon, you may choose to deal an additional 2d6 radiant damage. If you do, barbed spikes pierce into your hands, causing you to take 1d6 piercing damage that ignores resistance and immunity. Martyr's Resolve. While wielding this weapon, if you are below your maximum hit points, you gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls with this weapon. This bonus increases to +2 if you are below half of your maximum hit points. Flagellants Rite. As a bonus action, you may invoke the sword's rite of suffering. Until the end of your next turn, all damage you deal with the sword is doubled, but you are vulnerable to all damage during this duration. Once you use this property, you can't do so again until the next dawn. Curse. This weapon is cursed. Once attuned, you cannot unattune from it willingly unless the remove curse spell or similar magic is used. While attuned, any hit points you regain through magical healing are halved as your body resists relief, craving punishment over peace. |
