Lolth's Kiss (5e Equipment)

From D&D Wiki

Armor (breastplate), artifact (auto-attunes when the wearer takes a long rest while wearing the armor.)

Design Note: Please see Polymorph Fatigue for a clear understanding of these cursed items.

A soft, hairy breastplate seemingly made out of black spider hairs, with 4 strange holes in the back…

These 5 breastplates where once created by Lolth herself to show her appreciation to her 5 arch priestesses. Although looking like normal breastplates, they can make any humanoid be like Lolth herself. However, she didn’t just give these breastplates without gaining something in return, as the drow arch priestesses became much more lenient to their one and only master.

While wearing this armor, your AC becomes 16 + Dexterity modifier (max 2). Additionally, you may cast the web spell twice without needed any material components. The armor regains all uses of this ability at the next dawn.

Some strong magicians may know the story and the effects of this armor, as it’s rather often told by drow clerics. Make a DC 20 Intelligence (History) check. A drow gains advantage on this check. If you succeed, you know which effect the armor has, but not what triggers it.
Random Properties. The Lolth's kiss has the following random properties:

  • 3 minor beneficial properties
  • 2 major beneficial properties
  • 2 minor detrimental properties
  • 1 major detrimental property

Curse. When you take a long rest without doffing this armor, a spider egg (AC 18, 167 hit points, resistance to bludgeoning, piercing and slashing from nonmagical attacks that aren't adamantine) magically surrounds you for 1d4 days. The egg regains 5d10 hit points each day. You’re unconscious during this time and if the egg gets broken, you die.

It is said that while being unconcious in this way, you dream that you sit next to Lolth herself, constantly getting praised and seduced by her. Just before you wake up, Lolth kisses you, which is the reason why this armor is called Lolth's kiss.

While in the egg, you need to make three DC 18 Intelligence saving throws. Each saving throw has a special effect:

  • 1st saving throw: If you fail this saving throw, your aligment changes into neutral evil. Your PC may become under control of the DM if this happens.
  • 2nd saving throw: If you fail this saving throw, you turn into a drow. You gain the benefits of the Dark elf race while losing the benefits of your previous race.
  • 3rd saving throw: If you fail this saving throw, you swear never ending loyalty to Lolth, executing her orders with the greatest precision. If you are a cleric or paladin, your deity is now Lolth.

If it’s not your first time in the egg, you keep the saving throws you failed but redo the ones which you previously succeeded.

After the 1d4 days, you hatch from the egg with changes gained by your saving throws. But you also gained some other physical features:

  • The armor you were wearing has become your new body and you now have tiny black hairs all over your body and small mandibles on your face.
  • You grew two poisonous fangs, which may be used to deal 1d8 poison damage. If the target is a Large or smaller creature that does not have legendary actions, it must make a DC 8 + proficiency + Constitution saving throw or be poisoned for 1 minute. While poisoned in this way, the creature is paralyzed.
  • But most importantly, you grew 4 spider legs on your back, where the holes once were. While having these legs, you gain:
  • Spider Climb. You can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.
  • Web Sense. While in contact with a web, you know the exact location of any other creature in contact with the same web.
  • Web Walker. You ignore movement restrictions caused by webbing.
  • Lastly, you can feel the presence of any spiders within 1 mile of you and can telepathically issue simple commands to them, which they will follow to the best of their abilities.

A lot of drow think this is like any other lycanthropy, but it isn’t, as the power to grant a mortal this shape resides with Lolth alone.

Curing this Curse. The only way to cure this curse is by creating a new body or by casting the wish spell. All other means of restoration magic will just trigger the spider egg effect again after “removing the curse”.
