Lizardfolk (Grisaire Supplement)

Lizardfolk are the scaly people that populate some of the more exotic areas in the world, like Khaire and Lozor. Many also still reside in places like Kalim, where they historically had much ancestry. However, years of strife with others over their way of life has led some lizardfolk groups to migrate to other places. They are nothing if not resourceful, being able to adapt their hunter-gatherer lifestyles to various harsh environments, including the edge of The Frontier of the Barren Wastes.

Food and Medicine[edit]

For lizardfolk, food and medicine are almost indistinguishable. What one eats daily will determine their body's maintenance and health. As such, lizardfolk tribes usually prefer foods they hunted and gathered themselves, as they can inspect them thoroughly, rather than foods that are bought or traded from markets. Because food is known to be medicinal, lizardfolk will usually just eat certain foods when they fall ill rather than take specialty medicine like humans.

The idea of organ medicine is especially prevalent. Lizardfolk believe that the organs they eat will bolster the corresponding organ. They are primarily carnivorous but will therefore prize organs to be kept, preserved, and stored for medicinal use by tribal shamans in case of need. For example, the belief goes that eating the liver of another creature will cure your own liver of ailment and even strengthen it. This is not a belief unique to lizardfolk in Grisaire, and has also been observed in dietary practices of hyenafolk.

Cuisine[edit]

While primarily carnivores, lizardfolk did incorporate the use of plants and even stones sometimes in their foods. Spices and herbs believed to be beneficial would be fed to animals before slaughter and even used throughout the cooking process. Minerals could also be put in animal feed or grated over food. Overall, the general feel of lizardfolk food is characterized as rustic and survivalist. They cared for maintaining the body more than making food that was appealing to the eye. When times were hard, their food would reflect this, as their lifestyles were largely subsistence hunting and gathering. Food was fuel for the body and also a keeper in the way of health, so lizardfolk diets were centered around balance. As hunters, they focused on energy-rich foods that also warded off disease so that they would not fall behind in their hunting duties. Heavy meats, no matter the smell, are a popular staple in lizardfolk food. Organ stews and even flesh "biscuits" were considered homey dishes for special occasions, since ingredients were not always available.
