Lantanese Shield (5e Equipment)

Armor (Shield), Common

This shield, often but not always made of mithral and bearing the cogwheel symbol of Gond, was designed by the ingenious gnomes of Lantan. It has a small section at the top that has been cut out, where an overly complicated mechanism that allows a firearm with the hooked weapon property (see the Firearms of the Realms rules for more information) can be mounted and supported without sacrificing the protectiveness of the shield itself. Like most Lantanese inventions, however, the shield comes with a drawback; any firearm attached to it has a higher chance of misfiring, though a bit of tinkering can often fix the problem.

Benefit. While not considered magic, you retain the AC bonus of the shield when using a two-handed firearm with the hooked property. More powerful, enchanted versions of this shield exist at higher rarities. At uncommon the shield becomes a magic shield and gains a +1 bonus to AC, at rare it gains a +2 bonus, and at very rare it gains a +3 bonus.

Curse. This shield is cursed. Hooking a firearm to it curses you until you succeed at a Tinker's Tool check (DC 13 + the shield's total bonus to AC), unhook a firearm, or unequip the shield. Remove curse and similar magic has no effect on this curse, as it is a technological curse rather than a magical one. While a hooked firearm is attached to the shield, its misfire chance increases by 2, or it gains the misfire 2 property if it does not already have a chance to misfire.
