Kijen[edit]

We all came about within what we call the Crackling. Things that should not be... they despise and react with one another in a violent dance of creation... And then we come about.
—E'Li'Dath, Kijen Elder

Physical Description[edit]

The kijen appear as humanoids with swirling grey skin, as though their body housed a roiling storm. Based on their emotions, this dour grey can change into a myriad of colors, all rather unnatural or rare. Instead of rose red or morpho blue, you have neon purples and lightning yellows. Their stature is about the same size as humans, as well as their general shape. Rings of misty, foggy material is known to circle around their heads, wrists, hips, and ankles. Their eyes are usually blank and their faces and body builds are largely androgynous. Kijen are also hairless and usually wear loose, hanging clothing. They are fond of long fabrics they can easily wrap around parts of their bodies, as well as beaded jewelry, particularly bracelets for their wrists and ankles.

History[edit]

The collision of energies is a constant within the tumultuous world. Energies from the Abyss and negative planes that collided with the positive energies created various anomalies throughout history. The kijen (pronounced kee-jen) come about as byproducts of this process, one of many. Their origin is enigmatic, as they seem to form out of stardust and empty air. When they are formed, there is a strong cacophony of noise, called the Crackling, that heralds their creation. This amorphous beginning is believed to attribute to their variable and shifting appearance. Their bodies take a solid form but are believed to have slight instability, as this form essentially houses chaotic energies within. There are stories of kijen who spontaneously exploded, causing a rush of wild energies to pour forth and affect their surroundings in amazing and harmful ways. These stories are supposedly cautionary tales to kijen themselves that they must retain control of their emotions and remember that they house a lot of responsibility from their chaotic origin. Due to them being possible liabilities, kijen may not always find a warm welcome where they go.

Society[edit]

Kijen largely are solitary drifters in the world. They wander around and feed off of the energies in the world around them. While they have a humanoid shape, they are much closer to elementals in composition. As stated before, their volatile nature makes it hard for people to accept them. While cases of exploding kijen are rare, all kijen are born with a sense that the lack of control is bad. Some rebel against this feeling and revel in the chaos of their existence. These are considered rogue kijen who often put others in danger and give the race a bad rep. Elves are perhaps the most welcoming of kijen, as their chaos mirrors that of Fey. Humans and dwarves largely view kijen with suspicion.

Kijen Names[edit]

Their chaotic nature makes kijen largely uncaring for names that stick. The more controlled kijen may take a human or more conventional name from a mainstream culture and use that.

Male: Jimmy, R'Keth, Shinmai, Orkan

Female: Lena, Iri, Ja'At, Mabba

Suggested Characteristics[edit]

When creating a kijen character, you can use the following table of traits, ideals, bonds and flaws to help flesh out your character. Use these tables in addition to or in place of your background's characteristics.

Kijen are as colorful in personality as they are physically. However, many of them tone down their personalities so they do not get too excitable.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I shout when I talk.
2 I think more about eating and sleeping than anything else.
3 Instead of walking, I prefer to skip or run, anything else.
4 When around other people, I will keep my head down.

6 If I find something that interests me, I will never let that go.
7 I am very open to trying new things, no matter how dangerous it seems.
8 I tend to stay away from what is unfamiliar.

4 Exploration. I am a creature of mystery in a world with mysteries to be uncovered. (Neutral)
5 Happiness. I think, with my colorful powers, I can bring joy to other people. (Good)
6 Existence. I am just... living and trying to get by. (Neutral)
d6 Bond
1 The greatest regret I have was not finding someone to share my short life with earlier.
2 I have a dear friend that I want to see in person for the first time.
3 There are only bad people in this world so I refuse to get close to anyone.
4 I have been alone so friends are something to get used to.
5 It's not that I won't get close to people. I don't need to.
6 There are many emotions that I think are dangerous.
d6 Flaw
1 I don't know the meaning of quiet.
2 I talk in constant fragments for convenience, making me sound unintelligible.
3 I have no patience for anyone who slows me down.
4 I get frustrated easily by minor things.
