There are three kinds of spellcasters. The way one becomes a spelcaster is via choosing a class or Archetype that grants spellcasting: Full, who gain access to spells up to 9th level, such as Wizards, Clerics and Druids. Full casters are almost never tanky characters. Half, who gain access to spells up to 5th level, and who are usually fairly tanky, combat-skilled classes. The two in the PHB are Paladins and Rangers. Half casters do not gain Cantrips (at-will spells). Third, who can be any sort of class as long as that class has a magical Archetype, but they only gain access to spells up to 4th level, and they only gain spells of two schools except at certain levels. Many non-magical classes have Archetypes that grant Third spellcasting, but there are currently no official classes that have Third spellcasting, as Artificer is no longer official.
