Discussion:Healing Surges in 3.5e?

Anyone have any good ideas for how to bring healing surges into 3.5e?[edit]

Maybe it's fear of change, but I like 3.5 too much to make the shift to 4e. That being said there are some things about 4e that I do like a lot, healing surges perhaps the most. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck bringing surges to their 3.5 game. I have thought about bringing the rules directly over from 4 to 3.5, and think this might work fine. My newest group, in our infinite wisdom, decided clerics were for losers, so it's either healing surges, or lots and lots of rest and potions. I'm open to thoughts as to what would be the best way to bring a surge to 3.5.--Badger 23:11, 24 July 2009 (MDT)

In my games, I find that giving the characters Fast Healing equal to their HD when they rest suffices for the most part. However, I really like the idea of every character getting 1-2 healing surges per encounter, rather than a set number per day, and activatable as a swift (maybe a move) action to get back 1/2, 1/3, or 1/4 of their health back (since monsters deal a larger percentage of one's health in 3.5 than in 4e per round). --Ghostwheel 23:22, 24 July 2009 (MDT)

I really don't like the whole healing surge ability. I think it's sort of lame in a way. no offense to people who like the rule and all.

Saying just that "it's sort of lame in a way" doesn't really give any reason for it to be lame; what makes it lame? How is it lame? Why is it lame? What design repercussions does it have that would be affected in a lame way? Answer these and more to prove your point ;-)

well by the means of being lame is that I don't think it's right sometimes. using healing surges in battle really bugs me for some reason. if it was some thing like a cleric gives you that ability, then yeah. I'm cool with that. but I just don't like the Idea of playing a battle and just gaining like half my hitpoints back from nowhere like that. once again, no offense to nobody. this is just an opinion.

Since HP are not actual bodily damage you've taken (they're a mixture of bruises, scrapes, bumps, plot armor, luck, morale, etc), what's bad about regaining HP--maybe not half, but a quarter--during combat? It could be a second wind, or a boost of adrenaline.

well since you put it that way, I can understand a little more about healing surges.
