Is my new feat balanced?[edit]

My DM and I created a feat called 'Devoted Student'. The premise is that any two spellcasting classes you have stack for purposes of caster level and spells per day. The prerequisites are as follows:

Any two metamagic feats, Eschew Materials or Magical Aptitude, 13 ranks in Knowledge (nature), Knowledge (aracana), or Knowledge (religion), and an ability score of 20 in the applicable spellcasting ability of both classes.

If you wanted to do a Sorcerer/Cleric, you would have to have a CHA 20 and a WIS 20 to benefit. Likewise with a Wizard/Bard, you would have to have a INT 20 and a CHA 20 to benefit..or whatever combination of spellcasting classes. Obviously if you had two classes that drew from the same ability, you would have to acquire an ability score of 20 to benefit (i.e. Druid/Cleric, Bard/Sorcerer, Ranger/Paladin, Wizard/Wu Jen, etc.)

Does this seem okay? I realize that the final product recieves an insane amount of spells cast at the level of a normal single-classed character. However, the prerequisites set the bar quite high given that you have to invest 13 ranks, atleast 2 ability points, and four feats to gain the perks of this feat. That and the minimum level required to acquire this feat is 12th. Seems fair for all the trouble you have to go through to get it. Especially if you want to multiclass two who don't draw from the same ability.

Anyway, let me know what ya'll think.

So you're telling me a Bard 10/Sorcerer 10 with 20+ charisma gets to count as a Bard 20/ Sorcerer 20, if he spends 13 skill ranks, and gets the right feats? Ask yourself this, if you were playing a sorcerer, and didn't take this feat, and I was playing the Bard/sorcerer above, would you be upset when we were both level 20? I would have all 20 casting levels that you did as a sorcerer, plus the familiar, plus the first 10 levels of bardic abilities, and full bardic spell-casting. The fact that I traded a couple feats and skill points for more than double power should indicate this is unbalanced. There is no point in saying "you have to invest at least 2 ability points", because that's where I would be putting them anyway. Most casters have ranks in Knowledge (Arcana) anyway.

Hmm...hadn't thought of it that way. The point was to make multiclassing spellcasters more appealing. What with the eventuality of sucky caster levels. Though there is no point to mention the Bard abilities since they are Bard level dependent. And the familiar's abilities are based on your ECL. This feat doesn't affect either of those. So I've modified the prerequisites and benefits of the feat. I increased the required ranks (thus increasing the required level) and eliminated the spells per day stack (replaced with spell access stack.) Lemme know what you think.

Devoted Student (General Feat)

You have an intimate understanding of where you draw your powers from. As such, you are able to progress along both paths of magic unhindered.

Prerequisites: Eschew Materials or Magical Aptitude, any two metamagic feats, 18 ranks in knowledge (religion), knowledge (nature), or knowledge (arcana), and an ability score of 20 in the applicable spellcasting ability (Wisdom for Rangers, Clerics, Paladins, and Druids. Intelligence for Wizards, and Charisma for Sorcerers and Bards.) If you have two classes that draw from two different abilities, you must have a score of 20 in each ability.

Benefit: Spell access and caster level between two chosen spellcasting classes stack. This does not increase your spells per day (take the higher of the two classes to determine spells per day.)

That might be of an overcorrection on the spells per day. Think about this a sorc 10/ bard 10 would be 20th level with 20th level spell access from both classes but would only have spells per day as a 10th level sorcerer. How about this;

Gains spells per day on level up using the most gained per day. until combined level 20 from the classes bound by this feat. At 20th combined level you no longer gain spells per day when leveling the classes bound by this feat.

this way the feat doesn't screw with a third class or prestige class not connected to this feat and gives that sorc 10/ bard 10 access to sorcerer and bard spells as 20th in each and spells per day as a 19th level sorcerer and 1st level bard.Mordred the dark (talk) 09:47, 14 October 2014 (MDT)
