More information...

Some breeds of Hound Canin are truly masters of tracking by scent

Canin come in many different breeds and many of these breeds fall into different categories, similar to regular dogs. The hounds can be further divided into two subcategories: Scent Hound and Sight Hound. Scent Hounds rely on scent far more than they do sight and have the most sensitive noses of any Canin or other canine-like creature. Scent Hounds typical have long, droopy ears and loose, moist lips. Some hounds are born as Scent Hounds while others, even if they are members of a breed that would technically qualify, obtain the template later through rigorous training to increase their abilities.

The scent hound type includes the following breeds: Alpine Dachsbrache, American Foxhound, Anglo-French hounds (crossed with English Foxhounds), Anglo-Français de Petite Vénerie, Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore, Grand anglo-français blanc et orange, Grand anglo-français blanc et noir, Ariegeois, Artois Hound, Austrian black and tan hound, Basset Artesien Normand, Basset Bleu de Gascogne, Basset Fauve de Bretagne, Basset Hound, Bavarian Mountain hound, Beagle, Beagle-Harrier, Berner Laufhund, Bloodhound, Catahoula Leopard Hound, Coonhound, Black and Tan Coonhound, Redbone Coonhound, Blue tick Coonhound, English Coonhound (Redtick Coonhound), Treeing Walker Coonhound, Plott Hound, Dachshund, Drever, Dunker, English Foxhound, Estonian Hound, Finnish Hound, Foxhound, Français tricolore, Français blanc et noir, Français blanc et orange, Gascon Saintongeois, Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen, Grand Bleu de Gascogne, Hamiltonstövare, Hanover Hound, Harrier, Hungarian hound, Istrian Coarse-haired Hound, Istrian Shorthaired Hound, Kerry Beagle, Kritikos Ichnilatis (Cretan Hound), Norwegian Lundehund, Otterhound, Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Perro fino Colombiano, Piccolo Lepraiolo Italiano, Plott Hound, Polish Hound (pl.Ogar Polski ), Polish Scenthound (pl.Gonczy Polski ), Porcelaine, Posavac Hound, Rache (obsolete), Segugio Italiano a Pelo Forte, Segugio Italiano a Pelo Raso, Segugio Maremmano, Serbian Hound, Serbian Tricolor Hound, Schweizer Laufhund, Slovensky Kopov (Slovakian Hound), Talbot (extinct), Westphalian Dachsbracke

Creating a Canin Scent Hound[edit]

Canin Scent Hound is an inherited or acquired template that can be added to any Canin or dog-like humanoid or monstrous humanoid (hereafter referred to as the base creature) whose breed (chosen at character creation) is a hound that would qualify as a scent hound. A Scent Hound uses all the base creatures statistics and abilities except as noted here.

Size and Type[edit]

Special Qualities[edit]

A Scent Hound retains all of the special qualities of the base creature and also gain those described below.

Improved Track: Scent Hound Canin can always take a 10 when using the Track feat in conjunction with Scent, even in stressful situations that would not normally allow them to do so. They can move at normal speed at no penalty, but still take a -20 penalty for moving at twice their normal speed (Scent Hounds are slow and methodical anyway). Their DCs for Survival checks when using Scent are decreased by 5. Their DCs of Survival checks when using Scent only increase by +1 for every 3 days since the trail was made and their DC modifiers for Poor Visibility are halved (rounded down) since they are not relying on sight anyway.

Certain breeds also gain additional special qualities as described below

Basset Hound:

Powerful Build (Ex): Basset Hound Canin are something of an anomaly. Height-wise they qualify as Small Creatures, but their bones are so dense that they weigh as much as a Medium Creature. As such, the physical stature of a Basset Hound Canin lets him function in many ways as if he were one size category larger. Whenever a Basset Hound Canin is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check (such as during grapple checks, bull rush attempts, and trip attempts), the Basset Hound Canin is treated as one size larger if doing so is advantageous to him. A Basset Hound Canin is also considered to be one size larger when determining whether a creature’s special attacks based on size (such as improved grab or swallow whole) can affect him. A Basset Hound Canin can use weapons designed for a creature one size larger without penalty. However, his space and reach remain those of a creature of his actual size. The benefits of this racial trait stack with the effects of powers, abilities, and spells that change the subject’s size category.

Sink Like a Stone: Due to their bone density, Basset Hound Canin, like their namesake, literally cannot swim. If they end up in water deep enough that they can’t touch the bottom, they literally sink and must be rescued by one of their companions. They lose Swim from their Class Skill list no matter what class they take (even Factotum), cannot apply their Strength modifier, and cannot put any ranks into it. Additionally, they are treated as though they are always wearing super heavy armor for the purposes of Armor Check Penalties to Swim checks, taking a -30 effective Armor Class Penalty to Swim checks

Grounded: While it is not as severe as their problems with swimming, Basset Hounds have difficulty jumping due to their bone density. They are treated as always wearing super heavy armor for the purposes of Armor Check Penalties to Jump checks, taking a -15 effective Armor Class Penalty to Jump checks. They do not gain the other problems that Swim does though.

Bloodhound:

Super Sniffer: Much like their canine namesake, the Bloodhound Canin has the most powerful sense of smell of all the Canin. Their DCs for Survival checks when using Scent are decreased by a further 5 (to a minimum of 0). Their DC’s for Survival checks when using Scent only increase by +1 for every week since the trail was made. Their DC modifiers for Poor Visibility are halved again (rounded down to a minimum of 0) since they barely use their eyes at all while tracking (their skin folds slide down over their eyes, giving them tunnel vision directed to their trail) and their DC modifier for fresh snow cover since the trail was made is only +5.

Super Tunnel Vision: While tracking with Scent, the folds of skin on the Bloodhound Canin’s head slide down over his eyes, blocking his vision from everything except for exactly in front of him. This allows them to focus on following the trail that they have picked up. However, this tunnel vision causes them to be so focused on Tracking that they become unaware of their surroundings. A Bloodhound Canin following a trail is very easy to ambush as he is so focused that he won’t notice the attack until it is too late (he takes damage) and can’t hear his companions shouting warnings. If his companions are attacked instead, it is very likely that the Bloodhound Canin will not even notice. Bloodhound Canin following a trail have been known to walk straight through hazardous areas unaware of any danger until it is too late and have even walked straight off cliffs. While using Survival and Track in conjunction with Scent, Bloodhound Canin take a -40 Penalty to all Listen and Spot checks not directly related to their target. Only physical intervention, either by taking damage from an attack or one of his companions physically stopping him, will break the Bloodhound's concentration

Others: Additional abilities and penalties for other breeds of Scent Hounds vary and are at the discretion of the DM
