Brownies resemble a cross between elves and halflings; homely humanoids with slender bodies and pointed ears standing no taller than 2 feet and weighing no more than 6 pounds. They are as exceptional in their chosen craft as they are at hiding. It is contested whether they are distantly related to halflings, dryads, or perhaps both. Brownies typically live around farms, where they sustain themselves on leftover produce that is too small for farmers to reliably notice. In exchange, they typically offer some kind of service silently, such as keeping the barn rafters clean or using their magic to protect the chicken coop. While they are not necessarily greedy, they often enjoy keeping a small collection of shiny or mechanical objects, such as coins or watches, typically stored in the tree hollows and burrows they call home. Brownies are very watchful of the areas they call home: every nook and cranny is noted, and visitors rarely catch them by surprise. While brownies prefer to avoid combat, if they are outright threatened or if sufficiently evil outsiders encroach upon their home, they will typically use magic and their natural stealth to retreat, then return with their kin to harass the threat until it leaves. |
If a brownie deems a humanoid family virtuous enough, it might choose to become their house brownie, performing household tasks specifically for them such as spinning threat, baking bread, repairing farm implements, mending clothes, and wordlessly warning them of burglars in exchange for living inside the house and eating just a bit of their cooking. If a brownie believes their household knows of them, which typically requires them bragging about having a house brownie, they vanish. |
Variant: Browniebogs[edit]
Aversion of Thunder. If the brownie takes fire damage, it has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks until the end of its next turn. Coward's Curse. When a creature intentionally kills a brownie, it is inflicted with the Coward's Curse. Until it is targeted by a remove curse spell or similar magic, the creature gain's the brownie's Aversion of Thunder trait and their size decreases by one category to a minimum of Tiny. Extended Innate Spellcasting. The brownie's innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 11). The bownie can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components: |
If some scholars are to be believed, browniebogs are the halfway point between a brownie and a boggart, having the appearance and some of the mannerisms of the latter but the size of the former. Browniebogs have lower standards for judging virtuous families, typically only being limited to whether or not they are actively evil, and thus there are many more house browniebogs than house brownies. While browniebogs do the same amount of housework as house brownies, they play many more pranks, such moving items about the house or spraying its inhabitants' hair bright colors. Alignment. Browniebogs are chaotic neutral. |
