Uyyin Tanar'ri[edit]

Let's show those damn flyers they messed with the wrong demons...

Physical Description[edit]

Uyyin tanar'ri are skinny looking beings that have humanoid shape but are actually demons. Emaciated but possessing unnatural strength for its frame, these tanar'ri stand around six to seven feet tall and weigh 150 pounds usually. Their bodies are sometimes resembling that of lithe muscle rather than emaciated bone. An uyyin tanar'ri's body is completely hairless, with gray skin that feels like cured leather but also has a strange wetness or sliminess to the touch. Otherwise humanoid, these demons have the of four arms, with which it could simultaneously wield two large longbows with deadly expertise, its preferred weapon type. Despite being not much taller than an above average human, their legs are long and wiry. They have feet with four-jointed toes that can clench securely onto the area which they stood, allowing them to perch and snipe with ease.

History[edit]

The uyyin tanar'ri are a member of the subcategory of demons called tanar'ri. They were created for the purpose of slavedom by the obyriths, ancient demons that could drive mortals insane with a glance. The tanar'ri revolted and slew many of their masters, becoming the dominant race of all of the Abyss. They make up most of the demon population today, and most of the known demon lords are actually tanar'ri. They are the classic demons, arising from humanity's flaws and sins. The uyyin are specifically named so because of their intended purpose of being archers, as uyyin means "arrow" in Abyssal. They originally were found only in Avernus, the Abyss, and the Blood Rift, serving in the demon armies. As a result of the Blood War, they spread to the rest of the Lower Planes, even crossing planar borders when the Rift neared and bridged into them. Today, they can be found in a variety of locations including the Barrens of Doom and Despair, the Dismal Caverns, the Demonweb Pits, Fury's Heart, Hammergrim, Nishrek, and the Supreme Throne. They are even found in the World Above, on Faerun due to the folly of summoners and conjurers who call them into their plane.

Society[edit]

Due to their purpose for creation as a warrior race, uyyin tanar'ri prefer to fight in orderly legions with several hundreds of their kind. Fighting is first and foremost in their mind, and they settle for no less than domination. These demon archers once exclusively serving as warriors were later given missions outside of outright warfare by their masters, which included duties of scouting. Battle, however, in an form, remains at the forefront of their minds, and they are therefore excellent soldiers that usually function below a commanding demon. High caliber demonic summoners can conjure these demons by sacrificing their ability to call the recruiters known as babaus, sacrificing a ruthless spy for a battlefield dominating archer. The uyyin tanar'ri tend to set up camp where they are sent forth to, and never usually come alone. As such, pockets of them may move unnoticed throughout the Material Realm, causing strife and massacres wherever they go.

Personality[edit]

Possibly more than any other demons, uyyin tanar'ri understand the virtue of teamwork. Individuals were easily outranked by a variety of other demons and as such were forced to follow their commands. However, when in large enough numbers, they knew that they were instrumental enough to their masters plans that they challenge demons normally above their station. Therefore, it is custom and nigh mandate for them to travel in groups. Because of their existence as warriors and dependency on group status to survive, they saw that utility above all else was the path to a long life. That which cannot be utilized is discarded, and that which is simple to do can be easily replaced. This understanding of group survival was not to be mistaken for altruistic behavior, as they were still thoroughly demonic creatures. Uyyin tanar'ri are cruel, cold-hearted creatures that laugh at concepts like hope and goodness. To them, there is no such thing.

Uyyin Tanar'ri Names[edit]

The uyyin tanar'ri are a very learned group, as per their role as scouts. They can speak a variety of exotic languages besides Abyssal, though their true names for summoning usually are of demonic tongue. Like the normal demon, their names do not differentiate between genders.
