The inland sea between Arvel and Ni'Khar has been in the current form for more or less 8 million years, and with the plethora of islands scattered throughout and a wide carpeting of seagrass, it should come as no surprise there is an abundance of prey for a large predator. One such predator is the uurugetar (Thalassarctos maritimimus "Maritime sea bear"), which despite the Kentarim name meaning "hunter sloth" is Kaimere's answer to the polar bear. These bears are not of the same lineage though, instead being the short-faced bears[1] like the spectacled bear. During the Anchored Period, these tremarctines were kept in the shadows by the macropredatory panda Agriotherium,[2] but with the drop in sea levels at the end of the Anchored Period, the panda went extinct and the short-faced bears took their place. Though they had short term success, these bears have seen their range decline for reasons still debated, from the replacement of marine sloths over desmostylians[3] to a new guild of predators to compete with. The uurugetar is the last species of this clade and while study has been minimal, a breeding pair in Roostercrest Zoo has allowed for some things to be gleamed along with the limited study of wild individuals. Despite the name "marine bear," uurugetar are not as adapted to the water as their 8 million year niche tenure might imply, in fact, taking to water is how most prey evades them. However, this appears to be a feature, not a bug, as it is much more capable on land than the crocodiles and marine lizards that it competes with, meaning it can drag a kill further inland or high on rocky outcrops to feed without molestation. Variant: SpecialistsLike many carnivorans, uurrgetar are known to specialize on an individual level for specific species of game, depending on what is most common in their local environment. Am uurugetar specialized in a particular creature (sloths, seals, etc.) adds double its proficiency bonus to attack rolls against that creature. Additionally, some prey require specific tactics to take down: for example, a sloth specialist uurugetar are proficient in Dexterity (Stealth) checks (+3), as well as the following trait: |
