Unggoy[edit]

Physical Description[edit]

H2A_Unggoy.png

Unggoy are on average about five feet tall and are relatively weak compared to other species, though it is said that an unggoy could tear a human's arm clean off in a single pull. Although they can easily walk upright on two legs, they may often use their arms to move in a quadrupedal fashion to add speed or stability to their gait. Their eyesight and hearing is average, and they seem to have a very well-developed sense of smell, sometimes sniffing the air to detect traces of foes or hidden enemies. Due to their homeworld of Balaho bearing a methane atmosphere, they typically wear breathing masks connected to large methane tanks.

History[edit]

Unggoy are descendants of amphibious primates. They are believed to once have had a splendid civilization that has long since crumbled due to their over-industrialization of Balaho. In their hapless state, they were ruled under the protection by the Forerunner Librarian and, under the subsequent relocation process, they rebuilt their culture. However, in 2142, as they were trying to rebuild, they were easily conquered by the Covenant. While the unggoy remain one of the lowest members in the ranks of the Covenant, their survival nonetheless was thanks to the religion. In 2462, they gained the respect of the higher religious officials during the Unggoy Rebellion and were subsequently allowed into the military.

In the Human-Covenant War, the unggoy proved to be a great asset to the Covenant, and later to the splintered Swords of Sanghelios due to their reproductive rates. Because they obeyed the religious movement more out of fear than faith, they remain largely impartial in terms of true alliance. After the war, the unggoy returned to their lives in their homeworld Balaho, though many still serve the Covenant's fragments. In 2558, they aligned with Cortana and the Created and were granted limitless resources of technology and ships, allowing them to traverse space as they pleased.

Society[edit]

The unggoy's culture has been largely erased by their incorporation into the Covenant. They have been granted very few civil rights in comparison to other members of the Covenant and on a good day they are treated like second-class citizens. Despite the advances in civil rights granted after the Unggoy Rebellion, including the right to carry weapons and hold places among infantry units, their representation on the High Council is mostly powerless. The negative aspects of their existence are offset by the irony of their continued survival due to the acceptance of the Covenant. The entire species is no longer at risk of being eradicated by two consecutive horrible winter seasons, as they had on Balaho, a swampy planet with a methane atmosphere. Infant mortality is now below 50 percent. Average life expectancy has more than doubled (not including combat personnel). Geronticide is no longer a necessity for the survival of the tribe. Producing enough food to last through the winter season and burning plague victims no longer rank as the top two priorities on their daily chores.

Unggoy Names[edit]

Unggoy often have names which reflect a language of very simple phonics. Common names are just two syllables with duplicated sounds. Their names were not associated with gender.
