Turfers[edit]

The demon world is inhabited by call kinds of nasties, separated into turfs and their gang members...

Physical Description[edit]

The land of demons is a large and varied land, as the underworld encapsulates snow capped mountains to windy deserts, from the urban buildings lighting up the nighttime sky to the sunny shores where the great ocean lies beyond. Because of this, it is impossible to give one description that will incapsulate all demons, as they take different forms. Those residing in Forktown resemble classical demons; their skin comes in multiple shades of red and they have horns growing out of their head, of which they can be of any shape and size. On occasion they'll be sporting tails or possibly even wings depending on the specimen, however the wings are often juvenile and don't seem to have the power capable of lifting them off of the ground.

Those who live in the desert, who go by the name of Apocadesertians, take on the appearance of humanoid pigs. They are covered in soft fur, that can come in shades of brown, white, pink and black. Some Apocadesertians are even born with a dotted pattern on their fur. Some of the more muscular or aggressive Apocadesertians have tusks growing out of the sides of their mouth, similar to boars, and these are known to curl up on themselves, which can form elaborate spirals if left to grow.

The Armageddonites, taking to living near the seaside and on the warm beaches, resemble crustaceans, sporting eye stalks and shells that protect them from harm, with some growing as big as to take houses onto their back. Though, due to their resemblance to common crustacean, some Armageddonites have been shown to grow claws, and they often come in a variety of colors. Armageddonites often follow a form of self expression where they draw intricate markings on their shell, which represent personal stories that happen throughout their lives, or is just a design that speaks to them, similar to a human with tattoos.

New Neo City, the most modern and urban area of the underworld, is dominated by Turfers who take on an owl-like appearance, complete with feathers, beaks, and particularly bushy eyebrows. They stand at about the same height as a human, and several of the other turfers do the same. There are rumors of certain New Neo Citizens being more in tuned with their animal genetics, and gaining a resemblance that looks more like a normal owl than it does owl-like. New Neo Citizens are also capable of growing hair, of which they can stylize and dye just like a human would.

Finally, those of the Peak Plateau are mechanical golems, typically larger than your average Turfer, and are completely mechanical, inside and out. Because of this their appearance can vary significantly, and it ultimately depends on which Peak Plateau Golem you come across. Some of them go around on all fours, while others take the form of what is essentially glorified tin cans. Some have even shown to become gigantic, or take the appearance of dragons.

History[edit]

For as long as anyone could remember, the demons of the underworld have been separated, and some believe that this was purposefully done by their ruler, the Demon King. The Demon King knew that dividing the people would be the best way to stop them from rising up, and overthrowing him. Because of this, when fights started to break out amongst the turfs, he had actually supported it. Nowadays, no one in the demon realm can get along, unless they come from the same place, such as the deserts or the shoreline or New Neo City.

As for how these demons themselves actually formed, no one is really sure how this happened. Some theorize they are tainted souls of the dead, but others believe that they were simply created that way, with evil or aggression in their hearts and little else. Ultimately, though there are many ideas of where they came from, and who they really are, the knowledge behind their origin has since been lost to time, where not even the oldest of demons, in the furthest pits of the underworld, know their own origins.

Society[edit]

Although the demons have some fairly functioning societies within their own turfs, capable of forming close bonds and relationships within their gangs, they are rather hostile towards demons from the other turfs and gangs, viewing them with hostility. When one group of demons meets another, it will almost always end in a duel. At this point the malice towards other demons has been hammered into them for so long, that they don't see any way they could possibly get along with demons from other gangs, forever engulfed in a turf war with their others.

When it comes to other races, though, this animosity doesn't exist, though because of the fact that demons often stay in the underworld, they can often view other species as intriguing or possibly even suspicious. That being said, their true feelings on a certain race merely depends on which gang they most align with, and that feeds into their opinion from there. Demon societies have been known to take in outsiders, such as kappas, skeletons and slime humanoids, who vary greatly compared to the demon gangs in appearance.

Turfer Names[edit]

Many demons have naming conventions chosen completely by which turf they come from. A lot of them have names that are minor corruptions of biblical names, or things that relate to the appearance they take.

Female: Beebz, Luci, Tomoe, Ava, Pygmalia, Marnie, Shella, Mechanica, Metta, Athena, Twila,

Turfer Traits[edit]

A variety of demons caught in a never ending gang war
Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom score increases by 1
Age. Depending on the demon, some will not even reach the age of maturity until they're well over 1000 years old. Because of this, demons generally live for a very, very long time.
Alignment. Constant turf wars with others and the general gang mentality that many demons fall under lead to most of them falling under a chaotic alignment
Size. On average, a demon will not be any taller than 6 feet, with some exceptions idling at around 6 and a half to 7 feet. Your size is Medium
Speed. Your base walking speed is 25 feet.
Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Risk Takers. Being creatures of vice, Demons love a good gamble and to take risks, and sometimes, it will really pay off. When you roll death saving throws, if all three of your successes are above 15, you regain a quarter of your health.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common, Infernal, and one other language of your choice.
Subrace. Due to the varied environment of the underworld, Turfers come in all shapes and sizes. You may must choose one of the following subraces: Forktowner, Apocadesertian, Armageddonite, New Neo Citizen, or Peak Plateau Golem.

Forktowner[edit]

The most neutral in the gang wars, Forktowners are similar to your stereotypical demon, with a useful ability of teleporting between predefined checkpoints.
Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2.
Teleportation. Forktowners are able to create and set an arcane tag down anywhere they desire to "mark their turf" for later. While within 30ft of this flag, the Forktowner can use an action to teleport to said flag so long as the space is otherwise unoccupied. If the space is occupied, the Forktowner takes 1d6 force damage as they shove the occupier off in a random direction and reclaim their space. A Forktowner can only perform this action an amount equal to their proficiency bonus, and recharges the action after a long rest.
Platforming Masters. Forktowners are particularly known for how agile they are when it comes to quick movements. Gain proficiency in one of the following: Athletics or Acrobatics
Mediators. Forktowners are perhaps the most calm out of all the demons in the underworld. Because of this, they are often seen as mediators or diplomats amongst their species. When encountering another character of demonic origin, you gain an advantage on all Charisma checks against them, including Persuasion and Deception

Apocadesertians[edit]

Pig-like demons that live in the deserts of the underworld, known for their muscle, less known for their intelligence.
Ability Score Increase. Your Strength is increased by +2
Intimidating Build. Apocadesertians are known for being rather strong, and this reputation precedes them in every aspect of life, no matter the real strength of the demon in question. You gain advantage on Intimidation checks.
Scientists of Pain. Though these pig-men don't bother themselves with the sciences often, they are known for being creative in ways to cut and maim. When you score a critical hit with a melee weapon attack, you can roll one of the weapon’s damage dice one additional time and add it to the extra damage of the critical hit.
Skilled Survivors. Living in hostile desert environments can get particularly tricky, but the Apocadesertians make it look simple. You are resistant to fire damage and gain proficiency with Survival

Armageddonites[edit]

Crustacean humanoids that occupy the beaches of the underworld. With a shell on their back, these demons prove to be hard to crack.
Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution is increased by +2
Amphibious. You are capable of breathing both on land and in water
Natural Armor. Due to an Armageddonites shell, they are unable to wear conventional armor. Their shells instead provide them with a base AC of 16 (DEX modifiers do not affect this). Armageddonites gain no benefit from wearing armor, but their AC is incapable of going below 16.
Fast swimmers. Being acclimated to the shoreline, you are used to swimming often and swimming fast. Your swimming speed is 40ft

New Neo Citizens[edit]

Owl-like people who occupy the most technologically prosperous portion of the underworld. Because of this, they have a reputation for intelligence.
Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence is increased by 2
Eyes Like a Hawk. Rather paradoxically due to their makeup, New Neo Citizens have eyesight akin to that of a hawk, allowing them to notice small details and see far distances. You gain proficiency in Perception.
Nocturnal eyes. Their eyes have long since adjusted to the dark, and as such they can see further in dark areas compared to the average demon. Their darkvision is 120 instead of the 60 of regular Turfers.
Well Read. New Neo Citizens always have a thirst for knowledge, and keep themselves read up on the latest intellectual readings. Gain a proficiency in one of the following: Arcana, Religion, or Nature

Peak Plateau Golems[edit]

Amalgamation of parts and materials found in the underworld, they are basically the warforged of demons, but with more attitude.
Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution is increased by +2
Inorganic construct. Given that all golems are inorganic and made of metal, you are immune to diseases, and poison damage, have no need to eat sleep or drink, and magic cannot put you to sleep.
Powering Down. In order to initiate a long rest you must spend 6 hours completely immobile and in an inactive state. Though this appears to be sleeping, you are aware and alert during the process, and can see and hear as normal.
Superior Makeup. Peak Plateau Golems believe they are superior to biology based lifeforms, and they sure like to try and prove it, going above and beyond to prove they're the best. Gain a proficiency in one skill of your choosing
