The Consumed[edit]

"And thus, when all was lost, a pale hand rose from the eternal lake of void." - Excerpt from The Tales Of Gratilo, Bard.

Description[edit]

A Consumed is humanoid but is hardly near human, with varying builds and sizes, but all are marked by a gaunt face atop a skeletal body, awash with void. Their voice, if any, is ragged, speaking low and slowly, every word and breath causing them pain. Although most of them have intentions for good, they dislike the presence of beings they originally were and prefer to be alone.

History[edit]

No one knows where the consumed originate. Some believe them to be cultists or warlocks who have listened to close to their patron. Others swear they have seen them crawl out of the abyss that is the ends of the world. Those Consumed who are alive seem to have lost their ability to speak, while the rare ones who can refuse to speak of their origins.

Attitudes and Beliefs[edit]

The Consumed seem to have had past lives, already having a specific code of conduct that they follow. However, it is notable that despite their sinister, ominous appearance, most have the morals one could hold a Paladin to. The Consumed who can speak allude to the fat that they do this to spite their creator, who appears to have created them for purely malevolent purposes. Since they have broken free, they refuse to follow the way of their old masters. Their personalities are usually one of haunted men, broken by years of turmoil, jumping and drawing their weapon at the slightest sound. With such supposed horrible origins, the Consumed have lost any faith in gods they had, and follow no religion whatsoever.

Consumed Names[edit]

Because many of The Consumed cannot speak, many never give their name. Those who do have consonant-heavy, ragged sounding names, paining the people who say them. There is no distinction between gender.

Example Names: Krankjas, Lyaigon, Melrilk, Feignfeld

Consumed Traits[edit]

The Consumed use their curse to their advantage

Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence score increases by 2 and your Dexterity score increases by 1.

Age. While they do not age, their voice and bones slowly deteriorate. They can fall to sickness or injury.

Alignment. Their alignment is various, but most tend to side with the good. However, almost all instances of the Consumed have a deep hatred for any form of authority.

Size. The Consumed vary widely in height and build, from barely 5 feet to well over 7 feet tall. Your size is Medium.

Speed. Due to their lower body being a skeletal, they have light bodies. On top of that, most have near inhuman stamina. Your base speed is 35 feet and you are immune to exhaustion. The Consumed cannot swim , appearing to evaporate when in contact with large bodies of water.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. In sunlight, the Consumed have a perception and defense disadvantage and usually look for a place to hide.

Spread. The Consumed, being partly made of shadow, can imbue a simple weapon of their choice with void. The void can terrify opponents, in extreme cases moving them to madness. This weapon then deals 1d4 Psychic damage on top of the weapons base damage.

Horrid Appearance. The consumed have a ghastly appearance that can frighten creatures that can see them and temporarily stun them. The creature must do a constitution saving roll above 8 to resist but if the creature rolls under 5 they are temporarily mad.

Hobby (optional). A Consumed may pick up one or several random skill or hobby to deal with their near insanity:

  • Simple magic: A Consumed may at one point learned to use their shadows to bend and mold matter to their choosing, allowing them to preform simple magic tricks, such as making small, handheld objects disappear and reappear. None of the magic the Consumed preforms is harmful or dangerous, though useful for entertaining children and mesmerized onlookers.
  • Drawing: One may have picked up a quill and ink on their travels, and can now produce simple sketches if provided parchment.
  • Exploring: This Hobby is a rather rare one considering that Consumed don't like being around other people and often go into hiding but the ones that do often explore vast plains and avoid making contact with any sentient lifeforms.

Languages. You are proficient in Common, and can speak one other language of your choice.

Suggested Characteristics[edit]

When creating a Consumed character, you can use the following table of traits, ideals, bonds and flaws to help flesh out your character. Use these tables in addition to or in place of your background's characteristics.

d8 Personality Trait

4 I put no trust in divine beings.
5 I am incredibly slow to trust. Those who seem the fairest often have the most to hide.
6 People being wronged angers me beyond what is considered normal, even if I too have wronged.
7 If you do me an injury, I will crush you, ruin your name, and salt your fields.
8 I have wandered the world so much, I know most everything of history, from texts and tomes.
d6 Ideal
1 I kill monsters to make the world a safer place, and to exorcise my own demons. (Good)

3 Independence. When people follow orders blindly, they embrace a kind of tyranny. (Chaotic)
4 Freedom. Chains are meant to be broken, as are those who would forge them. (Chaotic)
5 If someone commits a sin or mistake intentionally, there is not turning the other cheek, no redemption. Those who are evil should be destroyed utterly rather than let roam.

2 I assume the worst in people.
3 I have certain rituals that I must follow every day. I can never break them.
4 It does not matter my love for someone or my opinion of them. If they are in the wrong, I can never side with them and must raze them for their crimes.
