Talk:Chakram, Heavy (4e Equipment)

Probably worth listing a different size. Based on my math, a steel chakram of about average size (according to Wikipedia, "The chakram is half an inch to one inch wide and is typically between 5-12 inches in diameter") with a density of 0.29lbs per cubic inch, would have a weight of around 5-7lbs. Assuming the weapon is of negligible width along its circumference, 0.5 (width) * 5pi (circumference) * 0.29 = 2.27lbs; 1 (width) * 12pi (circumference) * 0.29 = 10.93lbs. Hence average size is 6.6lbs, which one could lean more towards 5 or 7 depending on the weight and size of the chakram.

Brass, the other material used to make chakrams, has a density of 0.3lbs per cubic inch, so barely different from steel in terms of weight.

Thanks, I have changed the weight. I have also changed it to heavy thrown/heavy blade accordingly. Marasmusine (talk) 03:03, 14 August 2014 (MDT)
A Chakram isn't a discus like a frisbee, it is intended to represent a ring of metal that is sharpened. Based off Xena's chakram dimensions (because who doesn't like a bit of fantasy), the volume of the ring is roughly 1.634x10^-4 m^3 (Pi*(0.064^2)*0.0127) which with the high end density of steel (8050 KG/M^3) the weight is 1.3 Kg or around that. This is about 2.8 pounds. So a fantasy Chakram is actually pretty light, so I am gonna change it back. (The dimensions of Xenas' Chakram is Outside diameter is ten inches (25.4 cm). Inside diameter is seven and a half inches (19 cm). Thickness is one-half inch (1.27 cm) on the inside, and tapering in a curve to a sharp edge on the outside. if you are curious, found by a quick google search and I am ignoring the taper so it would a tiny bit lighter.) (Edit, mistook diameter for radius and screwed up my calculations like an idiot, the chakram is heavier than I calculated (Pi((12.7^2)-(9.5^2))*0.0127) = 2.83x10^-4 so weight = 2.28KG = 5.03 lb, but I'll just call it 5 lb.) I went full idiot on the calculations like 3 times here damn. I'll fix it and put it back to heavy blade, although this is still on the upper side of weight as Xenas' Chakram is really big and the Chakrams I envisioned where quite a bit thinner. --TechyKat (talk) 07:32, 14 August 2014 (MDT)
I originally had them as light blade based on the image at Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sikhs_with_chakrams.jpg - they do look quite light, don't they? And they are described as being "twirled on an index finger" There's big ones and small ones i guess. Marasmusine (talk) 09:41, 14 August 2014 (MDT)
Yeah it depends on what you want, I originally thought one like that image. But then I saw other images of larger and heavier ones like giant frisbees of death. Maybe stat out both, since it is just a weight difference and looking at official 4e material has most Light and Heavy Thrown +2 Proficiency weapons at 1d6 damage making it seem that they are intended to be interchangable. --TechyKat (talk) 13:39, 14 August 2014 (MDT) (forgot to sign in my bad.)
I've made Chakram, Light (4e Equipment). In retrospect, it's amusing that we are concerned about the realism of it's weight, when we have this thing as a returning weapon (which as far as I can tell isn't a thing that actually happened) Marasmusine (talk) 01:21, 16 August 2014 (MDT)
When I first made it, I just wanted to make a Chakram like in La-Mulana and they come back while being one of the highest damage (but limited in number) projectile weapons, so of course it comes back. Screw realism I want fancy Chakrams :D. --TechyKat (talk) 19:24, 16 August 2014 (MDT)
How do you feel about making them Superior weapons, to represent the training required for a returning weapon? The heavy chakram could go up do 1d8, and the light charkram could have, well, something. I'm also trying to think of some better benefit for a magic chakram, since magic thrown weapons return to the wielder anyway. Marasmusine (talk) 04:20, 17 August 2014 (MDT)
