Did a quick spell check for you, hope you don't mind. :)
TV: While I agree that a listen check would make sense for a more modern hollow bored cane, one way of avoiding this quandary would be to have the blade pressure fitted into a groove toward the bottom of the cane (about 3-5"). This method would not necessarily increase the cost of the weapon.
