Weapon (any weapon), artifact (requires attunement)

Known throughout the world as the Evil Sword or the Cursed Sword, Soul Edge leaves a trail of blood and destruction wherever it goes. Originally an ordinary sword, after being bathed in blood and hatred countless times, the sword turned evil and gained a demonic soul named Inferno. Those who grasp its hilt are unable to escape its curse, as its spirit invades the mind like a parasite and drives its wielder insane. Soul Edge can take many forms, but is always constructed out of twisted flesh, metal, and bone, with an organic eye appearing somewhere on it.

While attuned to Soul Edge, you gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it. It has the following additional properties:

Weapon Shift. Soul Edge has the ability to change its form to that of any type of weapon to suit its wielder. Soul Edge can even split into two weapons at once to accommodate wielders who fight primarily with two-weapon fighting. Soul Edge decides what form it takes (see Sentience below) and can change its form at any time. If Soul Edge is split into two weapons, both halves of Soul Edge must be in close proximity to one another to transform into a single weapon.

Inferno's Curse. When you grasp Soul Edge, you must make a DC 19 Charisma saving throw. On a failure, you are forcibly attuned to Soul Edge and fall victim to its curse. While under the effect of Inferno's Curse, you are charmed by the sword. While charmed, Soul Edge can issue you a magical command, forcing you to carry out some service or refrain from some action or course of activity as it decides. Each time you act directly contrary to its instructions, you take 5d10 psychic damage, but no more than once per hour. Soul Edge can issue any command it wishes, short of an activity that would result in certain death. If Soul Edge issues a suicidal command, the curse ends. The curse lasts until you are no longer attuned to Soul Edge.

If you fail the saving throw against Inferno's Curse by 5 or more, you are dominated by the weapon (as if under the effect of dominate monster) while attuned it. If this happens, you become an NPC under the DM's control.

Inferno's Curse also inflicts malfestation on you while under its effect. Your malfestation cannot be cured by remove curse or greater restoration.

Devour Soul. Whenever you use it to reduce a creature to 0 hit points, Soul Edge slays the creature and devours its soul, unless it is a construct or an undead. A creature whose soul has been devoured by Soul Edge can be restored to life only by a wish spell.

When it devours a soul, Soul Edge grants you temporary hit points equal to the slain creature's hit point maximum. These hit points fade after 24 hours. As long as these temporary hit points last and you keep Soul Edge in hand, you have advantage on attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks.

If you hit an undead with this weapon, you take 1d10 necrotic damage and the target regains 1d10 hit points. If this necrotic damage reduces you to 0 hit points, Soul Edge devours your soul.

If you die while attuned to Soul Edge, the weapon devours your soul. Inferno cannot have its soul devoured by Soul Edge, as it is Soul Edge's spirit given physical form.

Malfest. When a creature is wounded by Soul Edge, after 24 hours have passed that creature must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or become malfested.

Soul Charge. While attuned to Soul Edge, you can, as an action, unleash a wave of negative spirit energy that empowers your attacks. All creatures within 15 feet of you must make a DC 19 Constitution saving throw or be pushed 10 feet away from you. Then, for the next 10 minutes, any creature you target with an attack takes an additional 2d4 force damage, whether your attack hits or not. You can use this action once per day.

Energy Armor. While attuned to Soul Edge, any creature that hits you with a melee attack takes 2d8 force damage.

Sentience. Soul Edge is a sentient chaotic evil weapon with an Intelligence of 18, a Wisdom of 16, and a Charisma of 20. It has hearing, darkvision, and blindsight to a range of 120 feet.

Soul Edge can read and understand Common, but does not audibly speak. It has telepathy to a range of 120 feet.

Personality. Soul Edge is sadistic and cruel, and delights in the suffering of others. It wants nothing more than to wreak destruction upon the mortal realm. Despite its destructive tendencies, Soul Edge is able to restrain itself if doing so will allow it to commit wider destruction in the future. Soul Edge's ultimate goal is to reclaim its scattered shards and destroy its nemesis, the spirit sword Soul Calibur.

Random Properties. Soul Edge has the following random properties:

  • 2 minor beneficial properties
  • 1 major beneficial property
  • 2 minor detrimental properties
  • 1 major detrimental property

Soul Edge may choose to suppress some or all of its detrimental properties when a creature attunes to it. Inferno is always immune to Soul Edge's negative effects, as it is Soul Edge's spirit given physical form.
