Somnius (5e Creature)
From D&D Wiki
Small fiend (devil, shapechanger), lawful evil
Skills Perception +5, Stealth +7
Shapechanger. The somnius can use its action to polymorph into a Small or Medium humanoid, or back into its true form. Its statistics are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.
Devil's Sight. Magical darkness doesn't impede the somnius's darkvision.
Innate Spellcasting. The somnius's spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 11). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 9 (1d10 + 4) slashing damage.
Infiltrate Mind (Recharge 5-6). The somnius affects one creature in range that it can see. That target must make a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw against this magic. If it fails, it sees everything around it in the worst possible light for 1 minute. Allies look hateful or even become monsters, a beautiful garden appears dying and covered in rot, a tranquil pool looks covered in slime and filled with dead fish. The target becomes frightened of the most horrific-looking thing for the duration of the effect. If that object is removed from the target’s sight for more than ten minutes, the target will become frightened of something else. The target will also become increasingly paranoid during this time. An ally of the target may attempt to talk the target out of the delusion, allowing that target to make an Intelligence (Investigation) check contested against the somnius' Charisma (Deception) check to negate the effect. If the remove curse spell or similar magic is used on an affected creature, the effect ends.
Forceful Sleep (Recharge 6). The somnius touches a Large-sized creature, two Medium-sized creatures, or three Small or Tiny creatures, who goes into hibernation for a week. If the creature is unwilling, it may make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw to resist this magic. While hibernating, the creature’s need for food, water, and oxygen is reduced by a factor of 10. The creature can be awakened for a brief time but will go back to sleep once it no longer needs food or drink. At the end of the duration, the creature will wake up very hungry and thirsty.
A somnius will usually attempt to subdue its prey by twisting its mind or forcing it to sleep. If it succeeds in this endeavor and manages to subdue its prey, then it will bring the creatures back to its home and slowly pick at the bodies. It doesn't necessarily kill them, so if the somnius takes a creature and starts picking at its arm, and the creature doesn't bleed out or die by the time it wakes up, then it has the possibility of escaping. If the somnius is not able to subdue its prey, then it will usually run away, or make a last ditch effort to take out the weakest in a group. Somnius take pleasure in seeing creatures terrified or in pain.
