Pit Fiend

Physical Description

Pit fiends are fearsome looking fiends with brilliant red skin and short, gnarled horns. They appear as scaled humanoids with bestial features. Wings develop from a young fiend's back, eventually into an impressive wingspan able to wrap about their body. Their fangs drip with venom, and their tail is prehensile. They are image that usually comes to mind when mortals think of a devil.

Pit fiends are the most powerful beings in the infernal realms. Many are generals who command their own hordes of baatezu. In infernial hierarchy, they are considered dukes, only a step below the archdevils. This prestige has existed for them since time immemorial, a testament to their massive orchestrations of corruption and countless misdeeds. Many a foolish summoner, lured by the tales of power these beings promise, attempt to summon one and bind it to a contract. These crafty devils are as intelligent as they are deadly, and always manage to flip the script in their favor.

Pit fiends are some of the highest ranked devils aside from other dukes and archdevils. They are nobility in lower courts of the devil hierarchy. Many aspire to attain higher prestige still and become an archdevil, which is simpler for them, not requiring a devilish ritual. They lead the armies of the nine hells as generals, being the most powerful of the infernal legions. Flaunting their power and magic, they love to bully lesser devils and throw around their weight. Many an adventurer has met their end by not running at the sight of these fearsome creatures.

Pit fiends are cold-hearted creatures. While a lesser devil may show weakness, these towering beings show no sympathy. They are perfectly able to feign it, however, and take great pleasure from toying with others. They are especially fond of twisting contracts which they establish with summoners. By the end of it, the devil usually has their soul quick and easy. This arrogance is not for show, however, as their strength and magic are no small feats. They can be dangerous when angered, or when their amusement turns to annoyance.
