Nyxkin “We are the flicker in your window’s reflection, the lullaby you half-remember, the glow beneath the waters where no stars should shine.” — Liraeth Whisperveil, Nyxkin Seer of the Waning Court

Race Overview When a moon is lost to the void — whether through calamity, ancient war, or divine slumber — it leaves fragments of its forgotten light adrift in the planes. From these remnants, the Nyxkin are born: fey-touched beings who walk between dreams and shadows, their very essence a reflection of lost lunar magic. Rare and often misunderstood, Nyxkin wander the world carrying echoes of forgotten gods, old lullabies, and secret paths between the stars.

Physical Description[edit]

Nyxkin possess an unearthly beauty, as though they were carved from fragments of night sky and forgotten lunar realms. Their features feel both alien and hauntingly graceful, and wherever they walk, there’s a subtle sense that the world is thinner around them — as if reality itself strains to forget their passage.

Key Physical Traits:

Skin: Their skin ranges from pale silvery-blue, deep purple, to deep, inky black, often flecked with tiny points of light resembling distant stars or shifting constellations. In dim light, their bodies shimmer faintly, and these 'stars' subtly shift and pulse with their emotions.

Eyes: Completely black or a mirror-like silver, reflecting the night sky no matter the time of day. When viewed closely, it’s said you can see tiny celestial shapes or falling stars flicker within their gaze.

Hair: Hair tends to flow as though caught in a gentle underwater current. It ranges in color from moonlit white to soft violet, midnight blue, or even deep obsidian threaded with subtle silvery strands. In darkness, it emits a faint, wispy luminescence.

Voice: Their voice carries a subtle echo, like a distant memory repeating itself in the back of the listener's mind. Certain words — particularly names of the dead or ancient places — may cause a soft shimmer in the air around them.

Markings: Many Nyxkin are born with natural markings on their skin resembling crescent moons, planetary rings, or celestial runes. These patterns pulse gently when they use magic or experience strong emotions.

Horns/animal like ears: Many Nyxkin's (Mostly Female) are born with horns or a really rare chance of animal like ears that could look like rat, cat, dog/wolf, or rabbit ears that range from the color of their skin, moonlit white to soft violet, midnight blue, or even deep obsidian threaded with subtle silvery strands. Their are some instances of males having horns but it is rare.

Tails: Nyxkins can be born with tails that look ranging from rat or cat tails for males, and dog or rabbit tails for females. It is common for Nyxkins to lose their tails in combat or get it removed as a baby, as it is a bad omen to Nyxkins if they were born with a tail.

General Build: Lithe and slightly elongated in proportions, standing between 5 and 7 feet tall. Their fingers tend to be long and slender, with slightly sharp nails, giving them a fey-like or ethereal appearance.

🎴 Nyxkin Appearance Quirks When creating a Nyxkin, consider these details:

Skin shimmers with faint constellations.

Eyes reflect the night sky.

Hair appears weightless, drifting as though underwater.

Voice carries a faint echo, like a distant memory.

🌙 Nyxkin Clothing & Adornments Nyxkin favor garments of dark, flowing fabric, often adorned with embroidered star patterns, beads resembling planets, and pale, glowing gems. They often wear hoods, veils, or half-masks when traveling among mortal folk, as their unsettling appearance tends to draw fearful superstition.

Accessories like crescent-shaped earrings, rings made from meteorite shards, and woven bands of lunar silk are common.

History[edit]

Origins Beneath Empty Skies Long before mortals charted constellations or named the stars, the heavens were crowded with countless moons — silver, crimson, and violet orbs drifting across endless night. Each moon was a world unto itself, home to strange beings, ancient gods, and dream-realms where mortal thoughts mingled with celestial echoes.

But as ages turned, cosmic wars and forgotten calamities claimed these moons, one by one. Some were shattered by starborn titans, others devoured by hungering voids, and still more slipped quietly into nothingness when their worshipers faded away. Yet even in destruction, a moon leaves remnants: dying light, lingering magic, and slumbering memories.

From these half-forgotten fragments, the Nyxkin were born.

Children of Lost Light Nyxkin first emerged in the pale glow of lands untouched by sun — misty woods, ancient ruins, and forgotten paths deep in the Feywild. Unlike elves, gnomes, or other fey folk, they did not claim a specific realm but wandered between places, carrying with them pieces of shattered moons and old lullabies.

Legends say the first Nyxkin awoke beneath a sky where no stars shone, walking barefoot through a world of perpetual dusk. Dreamfolk, ancient hags, and night-spirits whispered to them, teaching them the songs of broken worlds. They learned to shape dreams, veil themselves in shadow, and read the reflections of forgotten futures in still water.

The Waning Courts In the hidden places of the Feywild, there exist remnants of old lunar kingdoms — crumbling palaces made of moonstone, dead gardens where silver blossoms never bloom, and empty thrones bathed in ghostly light. These are the Waning Courts, and though no true monarch rules them now, the Nyxkin gather there in secret.

Within these courts, elders known as Whisperveils pass down memories of dead moons and lost gods. They preserve celestial relics — fragments of ancient orbs, stardust-infused artifacts, and mirrors that reflect long-vanished skies. It’s said that on certain nights, when the worlds align, a Nyxkin may walk between realms and glimpse the face of a dead god or a forgotten city in the stars.

The Mortal World’s Curse In the mortal realms, Nyxkin have always been treated with suspicion and awe. To most common folk, a Nyxkin’s arrival heralds ill omens: bad harvests, restless spirits, or the return of something ancient and best left buried. They are often blamed for strange dreams, sudden disappearances, or eerie lullabies sung by children in their sleep.

Superstitions claim that a Nyxkin can steal a person’s shadow or slip through mirrors to haunt the living. As such, many have lived as vagabonds, hermits, or mercenaries — rarely trusted, but sometimes sought after for their eerie insight into the unknown.

Modern Nyxkin Today, the Nyxkin exist in scattered enclaves — wandering moonlit forests, forgotten Feywild paths, and the last of the Waning Courts. Others walk among mortals, drawn to ancient libraries, star observatories, and ruined temples where the veil between worlds wears thin.

Though many Nyxkin long for their lost moons, others forge new destinies, carrying their ancient bloodlines into unknown futures. Some become Seers of the Echoed Light, keepers of old prophecies. Others serve as Moonwardens, protecting relics too dangerous for mortal hands. And a few, haunted by fragmented memories of dead gods, seek to rekindle forgotten worlds.

Nyxkin Sayings and Beliefs “The moon remembers what the sun forgets.”

“Where the shadow lies longest, a path waits to be found.”

“A lost name is a gift, and a found name is a curse.”

Nyxkin mark their dead not with graves, but with polished stones arranged in lunar phases.

A Nyxkin will never sleep under a sky without a visible moon if they can avoid it.

Society[edit]

A Society of Fragments The Nyxkin do not have a traditional civilization or central homeland. Their “society” exists more as a loose network of scattered enclaves, wandering family-clusters, and secret meeting places tied to natural and supernatural phenomena — ancient stone circles bathed in moonlight, caves where the ceiling still holds a glimmer of starlight, or Feywild groves that only bloom during eclipses.

They are a people of gathering and dispersing. Nyxkin drift through mortal and fey lands alike, coming together at sacred times — lunar eclipses, solstices, or rare celestial events — and then vanishing into the night for years, even decades.

The Waning Courts In the Feywild, the Waning Courts act as sacred — if not politically unified — gathering places. These courts are not ruled in the way mortal kingdoms are. Instead, ancient seers and dream-speakers known as Whisperveils maintain these spaces as living memories of what once was.

Every court represents a lost moon, and their gatherings are solemn, mournful affairs — part funeral, part festival, with tales, songs, and eerie rites to keep dead names and forgotten gods from slipping away entirely.

🌒 Attitudes and Beliefs Despite their scattered nature, Nyxkin share several cultural threads:

The Importance of Names To a Nyxkin, names are both dangerous and sacred.

A forgotten name is protection.

A true name is power.

They often adopt new names when entering different realms or mortal societies and seldom share their birth-names. Among their own kind, exchanging a true name is a sign of profound trust — or a challenge of dominance.

The Dead Are Never Gone Nyxkin believe that no soul truly vanishes; it leaves echoes in dreams, moonlight, or starlight. As such, they rarely bury their dead traditionally. Instead, they create stone circles or moon sigils, believing this keeps the lost tethered to memory.

To be forgotten is the greatest curse a Nyxkin can suffer.

The Cycle of Light and Shadow They live by the idea that everything exists in cycles — not just seasons and moons, but emotions, fates, and even gods. No grief or joy lasts forever. No tyrant reigns eternal. This makes them patient, quietly confident wanderers.

They see themselves as keepers of the forgotten, preserving dying light and ancient oaths until the cycle turns once more.

Dreamwalking and Omens Dreams are considered sacred pathways — places where the living, the dead, and the things between worlds meet. Nyxkin practice dream rituals, keeping charms and tokens made from star-metal, cold glass, or bone to guide their journeys through dreams.

Signs, omens, and portents are taken very seriously. A cloud-covered moon, an owl’s call at midnight, or a child’s lullaby sung off-key can signal the presence of something vast and ancient stirring.

🌘 Attitudes Toward Others Mortals: Viewed with cautious curiosity. Nyxkin envy mortals' short, bright lives but pity their ignorance of ancient things.

Fey: Kin of a sort. Nyxkin both respect and distrust other fey, aware that even allies may betray or manipulate them.

Undead: Feared and pitied. Nyxkin believe undeath traps a soul in a cycle without end, denying it its rightful passage.

Gods: Mixed. They remember dead gods and old ones, but see modern deities as temporary things in a cycle far older than them.

🌑 Typical Nyxkin Roles Though they lack formal society, Nyxkin often fall into recurring archetypes:

Whisperveils – Dream-seers and lorekeepers.

Starbinders – Mages who shape magic through lunar relics and starlight.

Echo-Hunters – Seekers of forgotten places, names, and objects.

Moonwardens – Protectors of ancient sites and dreamways.

Twilight Vagabonds – Nyxkin who abandon their kin entirely to wander mortal lands, becoming legendary figures in folktales.

🌒 Final Thought Nyxkin society is best described as a living memory. They gather not to govern, but to remember what was lost, to mark what remains, and to ensure that even in death, a moon’s light never fades entirely.

The Nyxkin's Language Yes, the Nyxkin do have their own language, which is a dreamlike, celestial dialect that reflects their connection to the stars and forgotten moons. Their language is a blend of whispered tones, melodic sounds, and ancient words that feel like echoes from another realm.

* Nyxkin Language (Linguistic Features):
 * Phonetic Qualities: Soft, lilting syllables mixed with sharp, fleeting sounds that are difficult for non-Nyxkin to pronounce. Their words often feel like fragments of dreams or unfinished thoughts.
 * Writing System: Nyxkin use symbols that resemble abstract lunar phases or the shifting patterns of starlight. These symbols are often used in rituals or to mark sacred places, such as the Waning Courts.
 * Function: The language is often spoken in short, cryptic sentences that are hard to fully interpret without understanding the deep symbolism of the words. Non-Nyxkin rarely understand the true meaning unless they have learned to interpret the context and symbolism.

Nyxkin Names[edit]

Nyxkin names are often composed of two parts: a true name and a given name. The true name is usually a fragment of a dead moon’s name, or something related to their lunar heritage. It is a secret, shared only with the closest of kin or those they trust implicitly. The given name is something they adopt when interacting with the mortal world, or when they enter a new phase of their life.

Structure of Nyxkin Names: True Names

* Nature: Eclipses, moons, shadows, or forgotten gods and constellations.
* Example Traits: Soft syllables, like whispers, or hard consonants that sound like celestial echoes. Often carry a sense of old magic and mystery.
 * Gender Neutral: Often chosen by the Nyxkin, rarely defined by gender.

Given Names

 * Nature: Derived from natural elements (mist, night, shadow) or old fey words. Sometimes include references to personal traits or actions (e.g., Vailor for a protector, Nyphira for one who is swift).
 * Pronunciation: Flowing but with hints of cosmic grandeur.

Nyxkin male names typically combine an ethereal sound with a hint of strength or quiet wisdom, referencing their past as lunar dreamwalkers. They evoke a sense of quiet, almost poetic grace, yet are bold in their way. Nyxkin female names often carry an air of gentle mystery — soft vowels, delicate yet commanding sounds. They often reflect an aura of light and dreamlike serenity, connecting to the idea of starlight or moon-glow. Because Nyxkin do not form traditional family units, their "surnames" are often based on their affiliations with the Waning Courts, particular moons, or celestial concepts. These surnames carry a sense of place or purpose but can change depending on the individual’s journey.

🌑 Cultural Influence on Naming

* Lunar Phases: Names often change with the phases of the moon. For instance, a Nyxkin born under a New Moon may take a name related to shadow or obscurity, while those born during a Full Moon may bear names connected to brilliance or light.
* Memory and Identity: When a Nyxkin undergoes a transformation (whether personal or spiritual), they may choose a new “given name” to mark this shift. This reflects their fluid connection to the celestial realms.
