Mystage

There seems to have been an issue with the ritual... Oh no...
—Creator of the mystage

Physical features

Mystages are strange shapes that seem to form humanoid bodies which walk among the mortals. Their primary forms can be likened to that of a fuzzy shape made out of amorphous material, like that of mist or fog. These shapes harden into humanoid shadows, becoming firmer and clearer in definition. One can clearly see the face, head, torso, and even arms and legs. Mystages were once thought to be mirages that took physical form, which is understandable. While they appear ethereal and wispy, they are capable of wearing armor and clothing, albeit these are a bit silly to them. The material of a mystage's body is unknown but it is theorized to be a strange gaseous chemical that becomes solid when accrued, possibly when a mystage is born or created. This chemical is black and vapor-like, but become white and opaque when gathered towards the crux of a mystage body. The form is so solid that is capable of having shadow, which is what allows people to differentiate detailed features of mystages. They can also be hit with material weapons as a result. Mystages are able to have masculine features like rippling muscles, or feminine traits like soft lips and long lashes as a result. Their form usually retains that of a human's, though they can appear a bit like a ghost, particularly when their legs are often lesser formed than their upper body. The eyes of a mystage are always blank, with granules of greyish specks littering the corners.

History

The ability to phase in and out of material is a skill long coveted for battle. It would allow one to bypass material defenses and danger from all nonmagical obstacles and weapons. Such was the intention behind a large military magic project. Mages were hired to see if they could infuse the power of apparitions and magic like misty step into soldiers, which would allow them to phase their bodies at will. Needless to say, some issues arose with the experiments and the result was the creation of mystages. Soldiers reported feeling nauseous and feeling their skin peeling away, only to awaken to having lost their original bodies. The project was scrapped eventually and the mystages were put to work as foot soldiers with the intention of being cannon fodder. The effects of the partial infusion allowed them to survive in battle and they narrowly escaped extermination.

Society

The mystage are a well kept secret within the military they were created in. Similar experiments were copied by other nations, resulting in the creation of other mystages. Due to this status, mystages are isolated from the general populace and prevented from living normal lives. They largely live separate from even fellow soldiers on their side. Their personalities remain the same as before they became mystages, but the isolation and dedication to combat makes them warped somewhat. They likely do not know how to act in many social situations or in times where violence is not allowed.

Mystage names

Due to their military status, mystages usually use codenames. They still have their original name, but it is simply unused. They may tell those they trust deeply. Their true names are usually pretty conventional with that of humans. Codenames ignore gender.
