ACTIONS

Multiattack. The shaper makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its bladestaff.

Bladestaff. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) slashing damage, or 11 (1d8 + 3 plus 1d6) slashing damage when used with two hands to make a melee attack.

Among the kroot stand shapers, wizened and skilled in fieldcraft, combat, and genetics. At least one always exists in a kindred; upon the death of a shaper a new one will either rise or the kindred will fall apart. This is due to the pivotal role one plays in carefully balancing the genetic future of its kindred, carefully balancing traits in order to ensure development while preventing regression.
The shapers alone are capable of ensuring their tribes' future. They can specifically isolate and analyze the genes of an eaten creature, which allows them to determine its favorability. Over time, it will understand which creatures to eat when. In addition, they can curtail the kroot's instinct to consume the corpses of creatures slain in combat, warning them away from undesirable creatures.
As tribal leaders, shapers are just as skilled in survival as the kindreds they lead. In addition, they also perform several tribal rituals that call upon ancestral spirits. These rituals usually lend power to the shaper through visions and dreams, which typically provide brief flashes and glimpses of the future.
A shaper is no simple scientist or figurehead. Not only are they stronger and swifter than the average kroot, they possess knowledge of basic anatomy and a learned sense of genetic weaknesses and shortcomings. As such, one can even catch a skilled warrior off guard, targeting arteries and tendons with savage intelligence.

Tactics. Shapers are almost invariably encountered among their kindred, and provide better strategy. While each shaper has their own tactics, many use the traditional 'ambush rush' in which they attack from hidden positions in a mad frenzy. During this rush, a shaper picks out any unique-looking target and takes a bite out of them to analyze their genes. They also know to curtail the natural feeding instincts of their kindreds, so a group led by a shaper may pursue a fleeing enemy.

Variant: Higher Technologies[edit]

In settings with widespread gunpowder, kroot might wield their signature kroot rifle—or at least, a kroot musket. A kroot musket is a typical musket with blades attached at the muzzle and the stock, effective both at range and in melee. Shapers use these rifles as well, seeing them as effective at both melee and range.

A shaper with a slug-throwing rifle replace their multiattack, bladestaff and shortbow attacks with the following actions:

Multiattack. The shaper makes two melee attacks: one with its bladed rifle, and one with its bite.

Bladed Rifle (Ranged). Ranged Weapon Attack. +5 to hit, range 40/120 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (1d12 + 3 plus 1d6) piercing damage.

Bladed Rifle (Melee). Melee Weapon Attack. +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (1d8 + 3 plus 1d6) slashing damage.

This variant does not have any change to their challenge rating.

In the kroot's home setting of the 40th Millennium, Kroot have partnered with the T'au and as a result upgraded their rifles from slug throwers to pulse weapons. Shapers typically wield the Tau's pulse rifles as a result of this partnership, replacing their shortbow attack with the following:

Pulse Rifle. Ranged Weapon Attack. +5 to hit, range 120/360 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (3d8 + 3 plus 1d6) lightning damage.

This also does not alter the shaper's challenge rating.
