Hakamo-o is a bipedal, reptilian Pokémon with scales covering its body that resemble plates. Most of its body is light gray, but its arms and legs are a darker hue. They generally have angular, red eyes, a rounded, beak-like snout with a small spike on either side of the upper jaw similar to teeth, and two small scales flanking the sides of its head. Down the center of its chest is a line of three slightly raised scales, and there is a matching line of four scales down its back, appearing like bumps. Several slightly raised gray scales overlap its shoulders like pauldrons. It has three yellow claws on each appendage and a long, tapering tail. These claws are said to be very sharp.

The largest scale plates on a hakamo-o are the older ones, and stand out with color unlike its usual grey. There is a yellow one on its forehead, which is oval with a light yellow, heart-shaped stripe across the middle. Two circular scales cover the front of its neck; both are light yellow with darker edges. The tops of its arms are covered by three overlapping scales in a shingle pattern. The first two arm scales are gray with yellow trim, but the last scale is red with yellow trim and much larger. At the tip of its tail is a small, circular scale. This last scale has a light yellow portion before ending in a darker yellow. These older, colored plates are usually shed and have good conductivity so they are sometimes made into pots and pans. All the scales on a hakamo-o's body are its natural armor, providing an excellent defense. Many hakamo-o are proud to have broken plates on their bodies as signs they have known battle. These plates never stop growing and usually come back harder than before.

When a hakamo-o evolves into kommo-o, its multitude of scales grows around it and forms a sort of regal-looking armor. This makes them a bit loud when moving, since their plates are always clanging together. However, they use this rhythm of their bodies as instruments to fuel their battle fury.

History[edit]

The hakamo-o are evolved forms of jangmo-o. They were discovered within the tropics of the Alola region and are known to be belligerent sorts that seek to refine themselves via battle to evolve into kommo-o. Similar to other fighting-type pokemon, hakamo-o endures relentless battles and training to get stronger. This Pokémon leaves its fellows at a young age to begin training on its own and can be found wherever there are opponents for it to fight. When it finds an opponent, it dances and clangs its scales together to show its strength. This ferocious dance climaxes with a challenging war cry. These dances are known as hakaperuperu and have been mimicked by ancient tribes in the Alola to inspire their own soldiers in battle.

Society[edit]

Having left their own litters at a young age, hakamo-o do not have strong familial bonds. In general, the entire line of jangmo-o are quite hands-off. Even a fully kommo-o will only watch its young jangmo-o from a distance. They have a similar style of society like goliaths, where might makes right. The young jangmo-o who are unable to evolve into hakamo-o are usually bullied by faster developing siblings. Once they evolve, hakamo-o thus set off to go train on their own. They are known to be quite dangerous to any creatures they see as possible training fodder. Hakamo-o are generally very fearless, inspiring themselves with their rallying dance. They want to become as strong as the venerated kommo-os some day, who are enshrined in Alola legend to be warriors of light due to their glittering armor of scales.

Deino Names[edit]

In general, the entire evolution line of jangmo-o can communicate with each other nonverbally, using their plates to send messages via clanging rhythms and volume. As dragon-types, they do know Draconic, but they speak a bit of an island variant. These names are nongendered and often have deep, spiritual meanings to impart power.

Names: Manarah (Illness), Tangiraha (funeral), Ngyerah (unarmed), Whakarah (grounding)

However, because of how clamorous your scales can be, you have disadvantage on Dexterity (stealth) checks.
War Dance. On your first turn after rolling initiative, you can use your bonus action and strike a clamorous dance. For 1 minute, you have advantage on all your uanrmed strikes, but attack rolls against you have advantage as well.
Battle-Driven. As a bonus action, you can move up to your speed toward an enemy of your choice that you can see or hear. You must end this move closer to the enemy than you started.
Battle Claws. Your sharp claws are natural weapons with which you can make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic.
Subrace. Choose either the soundproof or bulletproof subrace.
