A grimoire is a cursed tool designed to store and channel spells through the user’s cursed energy. It serves as both a magical spellbook and an arcane focus. This system defines how a grimoire functions mechanically, including spell storage, casting requirements, and scaling based on its grade.
- Grimoire
A grimoire is treated as a cursed tool that is summoned through specific techniques. While active, it grants the following properties:
Spell Storage. A grimoire can store a number of wizard spells based on its current cursed tool grade. Use the table below to determine how many spells may be inscribed, based on a multiplier of your Charisma modifier.
Cursed Tool Grade | Spell Capacity |
---|---|
Grade 4 | Your Charisma modifier |
Grade 3 | 1.5 × your Charisma modifier (rounded down) |
Grade 2 | 2 × your Charisma modifier |
Grade 1 | 2.5 × your Charisma modifier (rounded down) |
Special Grade | 3 × your Charisma modifier |
Only spells you have successfully learned may be stored in the grimoire. You may exchange stored spells during a long rest.
Material Component Replacement. While your grimoire is summoned, it replaces all material components for your spells, including those that normally require a gold cost.
Focus Requirement. The grimoire functions as your spellcasting focus. You cannot cast spells using Magecraft or if it is not summoned.
Interruption. If the grimoire is destroyed, unsummoned, or otherwise unavailable, you are unable to cast any spells stored within it until it is summoned again. You do not lose the spells stored or inscribed as a result.
Inscribing Spells. Once you have successfully learned a spell, you may inscribe it into your grimoire during a short or long rest. You cannot cast a spell through the grimoire unless it is inscribed.
Ritual Casting. Spells sometimes require rituals in order to be casted. If a spell has the ritual tag, you may cast it as a ritual, doing so increases the duration to 10 minutes in order to cast and 1 additional cursed energy per minute to maintain the casting.
Different Forms. A Grimoire or rather, a spellcasting focus can take many forms. An example of this would be Solomon's Rings or a wooden staff. These focuses function as a Grimoire for all intents and purposes and scale as such and instead when you summon a grimoire, you summon hour chosen focus. Discuss with your DM what different form of a focus you want to use.
