Dual Type. Firefoxes are both elementals and fey.

Fiery Propulsion (Ignited form only). While dashing, the firefox has the following properties:

  • Its movement doesn't provoke opportunity attacks.
  • Creatures or objects take 2 (1d4) fire damage if the firefox enters the space within 5 feet of them. A creature or object can take this damage only once during a turn.
  • It uses its Charisma for determining the distance and height of its jumps, which are tripled. If a firefox performs a long jump, it can choose to gain a flying speed equal to its walking speed which persists as long as the firefox continues to travel in the direction of the jump. While benefitting from this flying speed, the firefox descends 10 feet at the end of each of its turns.

Heated Body (Ignited form only). A creature that touches the firefox or hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet of it takes 2 (1d4) fire damage.

Keen Hearing. The firefox has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing.

Quick. The firefox has advantage on initiative rolls.

Undying Splendor. The firefox adds its Charisma modifier to its armor class. If it would die, it instead becomes unconscious unless its tail has been severed.

Water Susceptibility. The firefox has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks while it is submerged in water. If splashed with at least 1 gallon of water, it suffers the same disadvantage until the end of its next turn.

ACTIONS

Multiattack. The firefox makes one bite attack and one flametail attack.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1 piercing damage, plus 2 (1d4) fire damage if the firefox is ignited.

Flametail. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d4 + 3) fire damage, or 7 (2d4 + 3) fire damage while ignited.

Explosion (recharge 6). The firefox causes a fiery explosion to erupt from a point it can see within 15 feet. All creatures in a 10-foot radius centered on that point must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw, taking 14 (4d6) fire damage on a failure or half as much on a success. Structures and objects that aren't being worn or carried in the area automatically take the damage, and flammable objects are set ablaze.

BONUS ACTIONS

Dash. The firefox takes the Dash action.

Ignition (1/Day). The firefox fully ignites. While in this ignited form, its speed increases by 30 feet and it gives off bright light in a 30-foot radius, and dim light for a further 30 feet. The firefox's ignition lasts for 10 minutes, but ends early if it is knocked unconscious or if it decides to end it as a bonus action.

Illumination. The firefox sheds bright light in up to a 20-foot radius, and dim light for a further amount equal to the chosen radius. The firefox can alter the radius of this light as a bonus action or extinguish it entirely, unless it is ignited.

Search. The firefox takes the Search action.

Firefoxes are magical foxlike creatures that can be found in the material plane, elemental plane of fire, and the feywild. They are bright orange with shimmering flamelike fur and a tail that trails off into a perpetual blaze.

They tend to be solitary, aloof, and fickle creatures. Their appetite for play and mischief is only matched by their aggression when displeased or cornered. A firefox at the height of excitability or anger will ignite into white-hot flames. Many hunters and low-level adventurers have met their end attempting to arrogantly poach or trap these creatures, but not without reason. Even a piece of the pelt of a firefox has innately magical properties, able to ignite tinder instantly with a touch, and a whole pelt is often used as the primary ingredient in crafting useful magic items with warming properties such as boots of the winterlands. A commoner that manages to capture a firefox would be set for life in riches.

Variant: Firefox Familiar: Some firefoxes are willing to serve as familiars and are highly prized by spellcasters for their speed and cleverness. However, firefox familiars often end up causing more trouble than they are worth, as their mischievous nature, fiery temperament, and propensity for (probably) accidentally setting important books ablaze makes them a serious test of patience for any scholar. A firefox serving as a familiar has the following trait:

Familiar. The firefox can serve another creature as a familiar, forming a telepathic bond with its willing master. While the two are bonded, the master can sense what the firefox senses as long as they are on the same plane. If its master causes it physical harm, the firefox will end its service as a familiar, breaking the telepathic bond.
