When selecting this feat, you gain 1 level of a class of your choice, thus receiving the characteristic of the first level of the chosen class (without receiving any proficiencies that you would receive in case of multiclassing).
When you choose this feat more times and choose an already chosen class, you receive the next level of the class (your preference bonus does not increase with this feat)
