Yuan-ti CR[edit]

Vrail 07:31, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[edit]

I would bring this up on the discussion for this creature, but I guess its wizards of the coast product identity blah, blah, blah. :P

Anyways, I have a 5 person party of level 4 PC's. They were attacked by 3 Yuan-ti purebloods (each CR of 3). I admitedly played the yuan-ti's very well, however they easily overpowered the party. This raises the question, is their CR fitting?

I think the CR is about right, if not too low. Congrats on your tactics. My guess is either 1) your players as a group have a weakness that is not being covered that the purebloods can capitalize on well or 2) your players made extraordinarily weak characters. Not all 4th level characters are created equal and, even without powergaming, players often end up with characters significantly stronger than the game seems to expect them to be. Similarly, but much more rarely except among newer players, a player may make a character who is vastly less powerful than expected. If your players' party has a specific weakness to a coordinated magic-resistant melee assault, or if your players just aren't the brightest and have a weakness to intelligently played monsters of any kind (no offense intended: this is a real issue), then you may want to, in the first case, highlight that weakness so that the players can solve it, using fairly 'weak' monsters that attack them in that way for some interesting fights, but geared so they can win, or, in the second case, make your NPCs a little dumber, but not much, pushing the players to think more than they are used to in order to succeed. This second case is one of the best things about RPGs in my opinion, as your players will become more creative and intelligent over time as they play in this case. If the problem is that your players' characters were just made badly, however, that is a different situation, and I would reccomend either letting them retrain, or figuring out what their actual effective party level is (if played optimally, what monsters make a good match for them?). Hope this helps.
