What happens with fewer or less people than 4?[edit]

I have a question for you other DMs out there do when you are faced with a group of players that is not the magic number, which is four as described in the core rule books. I'm mainly asking how do make the mosters more suited to fight them. Like for instance, if you only have two players, would you double the CR of all monsters? So if a normal group is fighting a group of four and the CR is 1/2, would you make the CR for the monster now be 1 for the two players?

There are a few ways to deal with this. Here are some examples I've seen:

  • If you have two players, you can either have each player gestalt, each player play two characters, or you can make sure they face half lower CRs than expected for their level. Campaigns with just two should be heavy roleplay.
  • If you have three have your DM also run a background player with the gang, though make sure this player never takes the spotlight.
  • If you have more than 4, you can break the group up on separate missions from time to time or increase the number of foes they're fighting.

Just some ideas.   Hooper   talk    contribs    email   19:57, 22 December 2008 (MST)
