Death Qaz (5e Race)
From D&D Wiki
"The time is now my brothers and sisters! We are not of the living, we are not of the dead and neither will be able to stop us!" --A death qaz warlord preparing for battle.
Death qaz look like un-gendered dark purple skinned humanoids with slightly tapered ears. They are usually spindly and tall with a "skin and bones" type emaciated look. Their most prevalent traits are their eyes which look as though one is looking into an empty void and a thin black aura that surrounds them at all times making them look as though they are always in shadow. However, if one becomes a chosen death qaz their skin tends to be more blue than purple, their aura is much lighter and wider more like dark mist than a blanket of shadows and their eyes tend to have a twinkling effect in them resembling stars.
A death qaz is born sometimes when a being dies in an area that has strong ties to the Shadowfell. Instead of dying normally, the creature's soul gains a form of dark taint from the Shadowfell and is reborn in an elemental body of shadow. This transformation is rare and the newly formed death qaz is not a reincarnation of its previous self. It has no memories of who it was and usually doesn't care either. Death qaz can form in the Shadowfell but for whatever reason, it seems to be the combination of the two realms that make this transformation more common as death qaz that are born in the Shadowfell are extremely rare. After several years of study, there is a way one can assure they become a death qaz though the way is a closely guarded secret (and notoriously difficult to learn considering one's loss of all their memories upon transforming). A death qaz awakens near the body of the creature that spawned them. As a result death qaz have gotten their name because people associate them with graveyards and horrific tragedies.
Because of their rarity, death qaz generally do not form their own societies. Death qaz are naturally mistrusted and can be rather nasty at times meaning that they are treated much like tieflings in regular societies. However, you will sometimes get death qaz who will form small travelling bands especially if all of the death qaz there are trying to fight their fallen shadow heritage.
