Ainz Ooal Gown was a depressed individual from another plane who refused to leave his escape route from the drab life of an office worker: a game that he and many other friends played regularly. Now, as his game shut down for good, he is now trapped in a new world, similar to his favorite game, yet also different, in the form of his extremely powerful avatar: An Elder lich. His followers are mostly demons whose creators have left them. However Ainz has earned the respect of countless people through selfless actions like saving villages from oppressive knights. These acts were only meant to suit his own ends: his ascension to godhood.
