More information...

Running into Vraath would take either intent, or a stupendous amount of dumb luck. It is a sessile predatory plant, which has grown to depend on a diet of birds, wild animals, and a relatively consistent stream of foolish glory-seekers that find themselves in the Arboretum where it's central body has developed atop an Artesian well. Apparently knowledge of a forty-foot tall man-eater in the heart of the Corrupted Garden isn't enough to deter those who seek treasure.

In it's resting state, Vraath appears as an absolutely tremendous flower with deep purple petals whose inner faces are bright red. When alerted, it folds these open to expose a central stalk topped by a body with two sickle-like arms, and a huge head with alien sensory organs on both sides along with a "mouth" much like a bear-trap. Surrounding this are a number of long, powerful vines that it uses to trap prey.

Combat[edit]

Vraath depends mainly on it's highly corrosive acid, which it can fire up to 200 feet, to apply pressure to prey and begin the digestion process in the event of a hit. Should an attacker close to melee range, it switches to a combination of slashing attacks with it's sickle-like limbs and slam attacks with it's prehensile vines. It's known to snatch up would-be attackers up to Large size-class and devour them without hesitation. However, if a prey-animal proves to be too strong to eat immediately, it will "soften it up" with a series of powerful blows from its bladed "arms." It has a distinct weakness to fire, as all plants do, and shrieks terribly when burned.

Acid Projectile (Sp): The mouth opens to fire out a large glob of digestive juices, duplicating the effect of an Acid Arrow spell (Caster level 2). It can use this ability at will.

Improved Grab (Ex): With any successful Slam attack, Vraath can attempt a grapple check as a free action without incurring Attacks of Opportunity. It can opt to grapple with only the attacking limb while continuing to threaten it's area, at a -20 grapple check penalty.

Constrict (Ex): Vraath's vines deal 1d6+4 points of damage with a successful Grapple check.
