The Voidwalker[edit]

Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.
—F. Nietzsche

Through their arcane and occult studies, some warlocks may stumble upon a copy of an ancient leather-bound book, older than anyone can remember. This is a Book of Void, a tome containing eldritch texts pertaining to things like the Far Realms, endless layers of the abyss, and the Void between planes. Through this research, a warlock becomes a voidwalker, a scholar dedicated to unlocking the secrets of nothingness.

Becoming a Voidwalker[edit]

Few become voidwalkers besides the exceptionally curious or mad. The void is dangerous and ancient, but it's power is undeniable to those who understand how to wield it.

Class Features[edit]

Spellcasting: At At each level except the 10th, you gain new invocations known and an increase in caster level as if you had also gained a level in an invocation-using class to which you belonged before adding the prestige class level. (This includes eldritch blast.) You do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If you had more than one invocation-using class before becoming a voidwalker, you must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining caster level and invocations known.

Voidsight (Sp): At 1st level, a voidwalker gains the voidsight invocation.

Voidsight (Lesser; 4th level): You gain the ability to perceive all reality near to you, granting you blindsight out to 5ft + 5ft / 2 voidwalker levels (max 30ft at 10th level). This ability functions in a vacuum and unlike normal blindsight, a voidwalker may use this ability to read, although she still can't distinguish color. This ability lasts 24hrs.

Resist the Void (Ex): Upon reaching 2nd level, a voidwalker gains a +1 bonus to saves against non poison-based ability damage and ability drain (such as the touch of an lich), as well as negative levels, energy drain, and death effects. This bonus increases by one every other level after the second.

Aura of Emptiness (Su): Upon reaching 3rd level, the voidwalker is surrounded by a dreadful aura of emptiness. All creatures (allies and enemies, not including the voidwalker) within 10 feet of the voidwalker to take a –2 penalty on all saving throws. Other voidwalkers are immune to this effect. A voidwalker may activate or deactivate their aura as a free action.

L'Appel du Vide (Su): At 5th level, whenever a hostile creature within your aura of emptiness recovers health, you may reduce the amount of health they gain by 1d4 + Cha points (minimum 0).

Perfect Voidsight (Sp): At 7th level, a voidwalker can no longer be flanked except by a creature with least four more rogue levels than the you have levels in voidwalker. This ability stacks with any other class that provides uncanny dodge, improved uncanny dodge, or another effect that provides the same benefit. Additionally, for 1 round per voidwalker level per day, you may act as if under the effects of a true seeing spell out to the range of your voidsight.

Perfect Aura of Emptiness (Su): Upon reaching 9th level, a voidwalker's aura expands out to 20ft and ceases to affect friendly creatures. Additionally, enemies become dazed for one round on any natural 1 that they roll while within the voidwalker's aura of emptiness (Will DC = 10 + voidwalker level + cha negates). This is a mind-affecting ability.

Voidwalk (Sp): At 10th level, a voidwalker gains the Voidwalk invocation.

Voidwalk (Dark; 8th level): You may split your existence between the material world and the space between the planes. As a standard action, you may gain the effects of blink. While under this effect the laws of probability bend around the voidwalker, once per round, as an immediate action, the voidwalker can choose to reroll an attack, save, or check of one creature within their aura of emptiness. The voidwalker demands the reroll after she knows whether the attack, save, or check succeeded or failed, but before the exact consequences have been calculated and applied. The result of the reroll takes precedence, even if it’s worse than the original roll. This effect lasts one round per voidwalker level and aura of emptiness must be active to use it.

Ex-Voidwalkers[edit]

If a voidwalker ever becomes non-chaotic or non-evil, she retains her class skills but may no longer progress until her alignment is appropriate again.

Playing a Voidwalker[edit]

Combat: In combat, a voidwalker's eldritch blast and invocations allow her to damage and disable her enemies from range, supporting front line combatants.

Resources: Voidwalkers are few in number and driven by a hunger for knowledge. They are likely to help each other so long as doing so does not jeopardize their quest to understand the void.

Voidwalkers in the World[edit]

The void is beautiful, but if you're not careful, it will be the last thing you ever see.
—Elphias Agarez, Human voidwalker

NPC Reactions: Like warlocks, voidwalkers are frequently misunderstood and often feared. Truthfully, the sane ones tend to be more reasonable than the average warlock, while the ones driven mad by their secrets behave how a mad warlock would be expected to behave. While they're not necessarily evil, voidwalkers draw their power from something dangerous and unknown, which is frequently enough to be disliked.

Voidwalker Lore[edit]

Characters with ranks in Knowledge (Planes) can research voidwalkesr to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Knowledge (Planes)
DC Result
10 Voidwalkers are spellcasters who harness the power of nothingness to fuel their abilities.
15 They perceive reality in more depth than anyone, allowing them to sense everything around them.
20 The yawning abyss that death represents to most mortals means little to a voidwalker. They resist it's call with ease.
25 The most powerful of them can split their essence between the void and material world to and warp the laws of probability at will.

Voidwalker in the Game[edit]

The voidwalker functions like a warlock with some specialized abilities.

Adaptation: With permission from your DM, this prestige class requires very little adaptation aside from the introduction of the Book of the Void to the campaign.
